NFL Analyst Names Green Bay Packers Free Agent Signing As Bust Candidate
The Green Bay Packers made a calculated move this offseason by signing veteran defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, but not everyone is sold on the addition.
Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton recently labeled Hargrave a potential bust candidate after pointing to his declining production and injury history. While those concerns aren’t completely unfounded, the criticism also overlooks the role Green Bay actually expects Hargrave to play in 2026.
Green Bay Packers Don’t Need A Superstar
The biggest flaw in calling Hargrave a bust before he even plays a snap is assuming the Green Bay Packers signed him to be their defensive centerpiece. That’s simply not the case.
Green Bay already has a strong collection of defensive talent throughout the front seven. The Packers don’t need Hargrave to post double-digit sacks or return to his Pro Bowl form. They need him to be a reliable veteran who can help collapse the pocket, play quality snaps, and provide leadership for a young defensive line.
If Hargrave gives Green Bay solid interior play while rotating with the rest of the defensive line, the contract will be well worth it.
His Best Football Came Under Jonathan Gannon
It’s also worth remembering when Javon Hargrave was at his best. Some of the most productive football of his career came while playing under current Packers defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon during their time together with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Gannon knows exactly how to deploy Hargrave’s strengths. He doesn’t need to reinvent the veteran defensive tackle; he simply needs to put him back into a scheme where he has already thrived.
That familiarity should make Hargrave’s transition to Green Bay much smoother than many are expecting.
The Numbers Don’t Tell The Entire Story
Critics have understandably pointed to Hargrave’s recent production. Over the last two seasons, he’s totaled just 4.5 sacks while dealing with injuries and seeing his workload decrease. At 33 years old, it’s fair to question whether he’s still capable of producing at an elite level.
But Green Bay isn’t paying him to be an All-Pro. They’re paying him to strengthen one of the roster’s biggest weaknesses while allowing the rest of the defensive line to stay fresh throughout games.
If Hargrave can consistently eat up blockers, generate occasional interior pressure, and help improve the Packers’ run defense, he’ll have done exactly what Green Bay signed him to do.
Expectations Matter
Calling Hargrave a bust candidate sets the wrong expectations from the beginning. If fans expect him to recreate his Pro Bowl seasons, disappointment is almost inevitable. But if the expectation is that he’ll be a dependable veteran who elevates the players around him, the signing makes far more sense.
The Packers didn’t need another superstar this offseason. They simply needed a solid veteran who fits their defensive scheme, and Hargrave has every opportunity to be exactly that under Jonathan Gannon once a
