World Cup 2026 Preview Group I: The Group Of The Favorite France

Jun 10, 2026; East Boston, Massachusetts, USA; Ousmane Dembele of the France men's national team arrives for the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Boston Logan International Airport.

The World Cup will begin tomorrow. Group I of this tournament contains the likely winner in France. The team has sky-high expectations, but is very good. So good, in fact, the number one-ranked team according to FIFA, being in this group, leads some people to consider this group the so-called group of death.

Joining France in this group are Senegal, Iraq, and Norway. Norway is ranked number thirty-one in the world, and Senegal is ranked number fifteen. All three teams should advance beyond this group. Joining these three teams are the Irquis, who are probably just happy to be here, after a forty-year drought. Do you think France will win the title?

Group I in the 2026 World Cup contains a potential tournament winner in France. Two other good teams, in Norway and Senegal, and one also-ran in Iraq. They might go 0-3 and not make it out of the group, but they are happy to be here. We will begin with them.

The team from Iraq has not been in the World Cup in forty years. The Lions of Mesopotamia have endured two wars and have taken a complicated path in qualifying for this tournament. Iraq does not have the firepower to dominate the field of play and will likely find this level of competition difficult.

The best player on the Iraqi side is Mohanad Ali, a 25-year-old striker. He has scored six goals in his last twelve caps for the Iraqis. He wears the coveted number ten for the Lions, but his talents will likely be wasted. A potential breakout star is Ali Al-Hamnadi. He is also a striker, and he has experience playing in the English Premier League.

France is probably the best team in the tournament and is certainly the best team in Group I of the World Cup. They head into every tournament as a leading contender. They have won two World Championships, and they have a deep and talented roster.

That depth starts with Kylian Mbappe, who scored a hat trick in the 2018 World Cup final. He led Les Buleus in both goals and assists in qualifying this year. He is a 27-year-old striker, and he plays for Real Madrid. He is aided by Ousmasne Debbele. They make a dangerous duo. Young players may struggle to get on the pitch for the French, although one to watch is 25-year-old midfielder Manu Kone. He recently finished an impressive stint for Roma and is a top transfer target.

With the best and the worst out of the way, the other two teams in Group I include a disciplined side from Norway. Norway is ranked number thirty-one in the world by FIFA. They have been missing from the tournament for 28 years. They had a perfect qualifying round, including twice beating Italy. They scored a lot of goals in the qualifying round, 37, and about half were scored by Erling Haaland.

Haaland plays for Manchester City and is a goal-scoring machine. He is just 25 years old and is already the country’s leading scorer. He scored 16 goals in qualifying. There are quite a few good players on this team, but one who could have a big tournament is Antonio Nusa, another forward for the team. He can play on either side of the field because he can play with either foot. He is called the Norwegian Neymar.

Finally, there is another good team in this group in Senegal. They had the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title overturned and given to Morocco. They are the fourteenth-ranked team according to FIFA. The Lions of Tegranga have a well-balanced team. They have veterans and newcomers. They blend them into a complete roster.

Maybe the most skilled player on this team is Kalidou Koulibaly. He is a stout defender. He has the potential to contain dangerous strikers like Mbappe and Haaland. The Senegalese start with the favorites from France. A breakout star for the team is El Hadji Malick Didouf. Also a defender, this 21-year-old will need to come up big against the talented strikers in this group. The fans of West Ham United already know how good this player is.

Group I Forecast

Iraq will likely get outclassed in this tournament and go 0-3 in the group and get eliminated. France could win the entire thing. Norway is a dangerous team that could advance to at least the round of sixteen. Senegal should advance to the round of 32.
