Thunder Urged To Go All-In For Giannis Antetokounmpo After Playoff Exit
The Oklahoma City Thunder have spent years building one of the NBA’s most impressive young cores, but after falling short in the Western Conference Finals, some analysts believe it’s time to make a blockbuster move.
One of those voices is former NBA champion and ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins, who recently argued that Oklahoma City should aggressively pursue Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo if he becomes available this offseason.
Perkins didn’t hold back when discussing the Thunder’s playoff struggles against Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs, specifically calling out young big man Chet Holmgren.
Kendrick Perkins Says Thunder Need A Superstar Upgrade

During a recent appearance, Perkins suggested Oklahoma City needs a player capable of matching up with the league’s elite superstars.
“Wemby straight up not only punked him, but he took his heart, he snatched his soul,” Perkins said of Holmgren. “Chet Holmgren was scared to compete.”
Perkins then pointed directly to Antetokounmpo as the type of player Oklahoma City should target.
“You gotta go find a guy like Giannis Antetokounmpo that’s gonna come in and move the needle and be able to go toe to toe in some capacity with Wembanyama because Chet Holmgren ain’t it.”
While Perkins’ criticism may be harsh, it highlights a growing belief around the league that the Thunder could be one major superstar away from becoming a true dynasty.
Why Oklahoma City Makes Sense As A Giannis Destination
Few teams can realistically compete in a bidding war for Antetokounmpo. The Thunder, however, are uniquely positioned to make an offer that Milwaukee would have to seriously consider.
Oklahoma City possesses an enormous collection of future first-round picks thanks to years of asset accumulation under general manager Sam Presti. The Thunder also have one of the deepest young rosters in basketball, allowing them to offer both immediate talent and future draft capital.
Most importantly, they already have a legitimate MVP-caliber player in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Adding Antetokounmpo alongside Gilgeous-Alexander would instantly create one of the most dominant duos in the NBA and could make Oklahoma City the championship favorite for years to come.
A Realistic Trade Package For Giannis
If the Bucks decide to move on from their franchise cornerstone, any deal would likely begin with either Holmgren or Jalen Williams.
A realistic Thunder offer could look something like this:
- Chet Holmgren or Jalen Williams
- Cason Wallace
- One additional young player, such as Ajay Mitchell
- Three to four future first-round picks
- Multiple pick swaps
From Milwaukee’s perspective, Holmgren would immediately become a centerpiece for a rebuild. The former No. 2 overall pick still possesses tremendous upside as a rim protector and floor-spacing big man.
Wallace would give the Bucks a promising young guard, while the draft picks would provide flexibility to reshape the roster over the next decade. It would be a painful price for Oklahoma City to pay, but superstar trades are rarely cheap, and OKC has a warchest of assets.
Would The Thunder Actually Pull The Trigger?
The biggest question isn’t whether the Thunder can make the best offer. It’s whether they want to. Oklahoma City has been patient throughout its rebuild, developing young players rather than chasing quick fixes. Holmgren and Williams remain foundational pieces of the franchise, and moving either player would represent a dramatic shift in philosophy. However, championship windows can close quickly in the NBA.
With Wembanyama emerging as a dominant force in the Western Conference and other contenders continuing to improve, the Thunder may eventually decide that pairing Gilgeous-Alexander with Antetokounmpo is an opportunity too good to pass up.
If Giannis truly becomes available this summer, Oklahoma City could find itself at the center of the biggest trade discussion in the NBA. And according to Perkins, the Thunder should do whatever it takes to get the deal done.
