The Seattle Seahawks have been in the news a lot this offseason. They made one of the biggest trades so far, sending quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders for a third-round pick. Tyler Lockett was also released, and DK Metcalf is reportedly seeking a trade. However, the team isn’t getting rid of everyone. They are reportedly bringing back veteran defensive tackle Jarran Reed, signing him to a three-year deal on Sunday.
Seattle Seahawks Re-Sign Jarran Reed
Adam Schefter is reporting the deal is for three years and worth up to $25 million. Jarran Reed has played nine seasons in the NFL, most of them with the Seattle Seahawks. He was a second-round pick by the team in the 2016 NFL Draft and spent five years with the team before one-year stints with the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers. The last two years, he has been a solid player on the defensive line.
Over the last two seasons, he has 11.5 sacks, 45 total tackles, 27 quarterback hits, and two forced fumbles. He is a quality veteran who fits well in Mike MacDonald’s system. While there may be some questions on the offensive side of the ball, the defensive side of the ball is more solid with Reed on the team.
2025 Outlook
The outlook of the Seattle Seahawks depends solely on what they do with the quarterback position. While Smith wasn’t an All-Pro player, he was an above-average quarterback in the league. Sources have said the team is targeting veterans like Sam Darnold, but there is no guarantee they will be able to get a veteran.
Sam Howell is on the team, but he was far from impressive in the few games he had to come in relief. Rookie quarterbacks are notoriously volatile, and the Seahawks are not in a position to get one of the best prospects in the class. The front office has their work cut out for them and will likely be very active over the next few weeks.
Final Thoughts
The signing of Jarran Reed is a good one. He is a quality defensive tackle who has produced every season. Teams need players like Reed on their team. He produces solid numbers and is now a veteran presence in the locker room. What will the Seahawks do next in free agency?
