San Francisco 49ers Release Veteran Defensive End Leonard Floyd

Atlanta Falcons

The San Francisco 49ers are releasing veteran Defensive End Leonard on Tuesday according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. Floyd signed a 2-year $20 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers last offseason. The team must absorb $8.6 million in dead cap by moving on from him.

Floyd is coming off a solid 2024 campaign with the team. He finished with 42 total tackles, 8.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. Floyd has been a solid player since being drafted No. 9 overall by the Chicago Bears in the 2016 NFL Draft. He has 414 career tackles and 66.5 sacks. Where will he play in 2025?

San Francisco 49ers Offseason Outlook

Following a disappointing regular season, San Francisco has lost many key pieces this offseason. A few pieces they will be without in 2025 are Wide Receiver Deebo Samuel, Fullback Kyle Juszczyk, and Offensive Tackle Jaylon Moore.

Another tough decision the team faces this offseason is what to do with Quarterback Brock Purdy. He is in line for a contract extension making him one of the highest-paid players in league history. The two parties are reportedly far apart on a long-term extension.

Final Thoughts

This offseason for the San Francisco 49ers has not made much sense. Releasing Floyd was the latest example of that. It is unclear why the team is deciding to tear down its roster after being one of the NFC’s best teams over the last few seasons. San Francisco could be clearing cap space to give Purdy a massive contract. They could also be planning to rebuild with younger players. Regardless of the reason, Floyd will have many suitors on the open market. The team that signs him will get a great player.
