The Kansas City Chiefs have made another move in free agency, this time strengthening their offensive line. Former San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Jaylon Moore is heading to Kansas City on a two-year, $30 million deal, per FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz.
The left tackle has been an ongoing issue for the Chiefs, with multiple players rotating through the position last season. Now, Moore steps into a crucial role and is expected to protect quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ blindside in the upcoming season.
Jaylon Moore’s Background and Free Agency Market
Moore entered free agency as one of the more intriguing options available, given the lack of high-end talent in this year’s market. Serving as a backup to 49ers All-Pro Trent Williams, Moore was forced into action last season and showed promise in limited starts.
The Chiefs had been searching for an answer at left tackle and reportedly pursued Ravens veteran Ronnie Stanley before Baltimore secured him on a three-year, $60 million extension. With Stanley off the market, Kansas City turned to Moore as their solution.
Kansas City’s Left Tackle Struggles
The Chiefs’ left tackle position was a revolving door last season, with four different players seeing time in the role. Kingsley Suamataia, a second-round pick in 2024, won the job out of training camp but was benched after two games. Wanya Morris, a 2023 third-rounder, stepped in before a bone bruise sidelined him.
Veteran D.J. Humphries joined late in the season but suffered a hamstring injury, leaving the Chiefs to rely on All-Pro guard Joe Thuney at left tackle. Despite Thuney’s efforts, the offensive line struggles were evident in Kansas City’s Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Final Thoughts
Moore now enters a competition for the starting left tackle job but is expected to be the leading candidate. Suamataia and Morris remain in the mix, while right tackle Jawaan Taylor is locked into his spot on the opposite side.
Kansas City’s investment in Moore signals their commitment to solidifying the offensive line after last season’s instability. With the NFL Draft still ahead, the Chiefs could add further depth, but for now, Moore appears to be their answer at left tackle.
