Superstar Rey Fenix has officially been released from his contract with All Elite Wrestling. After wrestling in AEW since its inception in 2019, he is expected to head to WWE. His tag team partner, Penta (they were known as the Lucha Bros) has already joined the WWE roster and has been making waves on Netflix on Monday Night Raw. Fenix was still contracted to AEW when injury time was added to his expiring contract, requiring him to stay while Penta left for WWE. But both sides have agreed to terms, and he has been released from his contract with AEW.
Rey Fenix’s Time in AEW
Fenix’s time in AEW was tied to his partnership with Penta. The Lucha Bros were among the most dynamic teams on the AEW roster. Throughout their years teaming together, they’ve had an excellent series of matches with the Young Bucks. From high-flying tag team matches to ladder matches and steel cage matches, the Lucha Bros and the Young Bucks have done it all together and never disappointed. One of their best matches was at All Out 2021 when Fenix and Penta defeated the Young Bucks in a steel cage match to win the AEW Tag Team Championships.
That was Fenix’s only Tag Team title reign in AEW, but he and Penta also teamed with Pac as a part of Death Triangle. Death Triangle had a run with the AEW Trios Championships. They won the vacant titles in 2022 and held them for 126 days. Then, the Lucha Bros and Young Bucks collided again in a best-of-seven series. Death Triangle faced the Elite (Kenny Omega, Nick Jackson, and Matt Jackson) in a series of seven matches culminating in an Escalera de la Muerte match where the Elite won the championships.
While most of his AEW run comprised tag team and trios matches, Fenix held his own as a singles competitor. He had multiple high-profile singles matches in AEW against Omega, Jon Moxley, Orange Cassidy, and others. He had one singles championship reign for the AEW International. He won the title against Moxley on a 2023 episode of Dynamite: Grand Slam and held it for 20 days.
Where Fenix Goes from Here
Fenix’s time in AEW was full of accolades and great performances, so it is sad to see him and Penta go. The outcome was predictable once his partner went to WWE, but it is still disappointing for AEW to lose two superstars so integral to the company’s foundation. While the Lucha Bros were not the founders of AEW or EVPs like the Young Bucks, they were one of the building blocks in AEW’s early stages. Now, with Fenix released, he will likely join Penta in WWE.
Penta’s WWE run has gotten off to a hot start. He’s gotten over on Raw as a singles star in matches with Ludwig Kaiser and Pete Dunne. His “Cero Miedo” catchphrase has translated to the WWE crowds with ease, and he has impressed in the ring. If Fenix follows him to the WWE, he could team with him to face Kaiser and Dunne, who have been feuding with Penta. The Lucha Bros could easily slot into the tag division, or they could be used as tag and singles stars like they were in AEW. Penta has connected with the crowd as a singles act, and Fenix could do the same if given the time in the ring.
Final Thoughts
Rey Fenix’s time in AEW ended after he was released from his contract. His expected destination is the WWE, where he will join his tag team partner, Penta, on Monday Night Raw.
