Travis Kelce Is Coming Back: The Chiefs’ Future Hall of Famer Returns for Season 14

Travis Kelce is not done yet.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ future Hall of Fame tight end has informed the team that he is returning for a 14th NFL season, a source told ESPN on Monday. The two sides have finalized a one-year $12 million deal that has a max value up to $15 million, the latest coming from NFL insiders Ian Rapport and Tom Pelissero.

At 36 years old, with three Super Bowl rings on his finger and a legacy already cemented in NFL history, Kelce could have gone anywhere. He chose to stay home.

How This Came Together

The path to Kelce’s return was not entirely straightforward. After the Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time since the 2014 season, Kelce was measured and deliberate in his public comments about his future. When asked after the final home game of the season whether he would be back, he answered simply: “Who knows?”

The recurring theme in everything Kelce said was his body. He made clear, repeatedly, that his decision would come down to how he felt physically after the season and whether he believed he still had a full year of football left in him. The early playoff exit, as disappointing as it was, gave him something valuable: extra time. More rest. More recovery. More time to make the right call.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, that message has now been delivered to the teams that were hoping to make a run at him. Kelce is going back to Kansas City.

The Market He Walked Away From

Make no mistake, Kelce had options. Multiple teams were reportedly interested in at least having a conversation with him, and given what he produced in his 13th season, that interest was well founded.

In 2025, Kelce led the Chiefs with 76 catches for 851 yards and five touchdowns on 108 targets. He also led the team in receiving first downs with 45. Those are not the numbers of a player winding down. Those are the numbers of a player who still belongs on the field at the highest level, which is exactly why Rapoport noted that he would have “commanded top dollar” on the open market.

However, according to sources, Kelce was not interested in listening to other teams. He is likely leaving money on the table to stay in Kansas City. That decision speaks to something that statistics cannot fully capture.

What Loyalty Looks Like

Andy Reid is the only head coach Kelce has ever played for in the NFL. Patrick Mahomes is the quarterback who helped him reach heights that very few players at any position have ever touched. Chris Jones, who reportedly never bought into the retirement speculation, was not surprised by this outcome.

Kelce has now joined Jerry Rice as just the second player in NFL history to record 12 consecutive seasons with over 800 receiving yards. He is one of three tight ends in league history to surpass 13,000 receiving yards, reaching that milestone faster than both Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten. Eleven straight Pro Bowl selections. Four first-team All-Pro honors.

These are numbers that belong in Canton, and Kelce knows it. But before that chapter begins, there is one more season to play and, if everything goes right, one more championship to chase.

What It Means for Kansas City

The Chiefs enter 2026 with some unfinished business. Missing the playoffs stings in Kansas City, where the standard has been set so high for so long. Bringing Kelce back adds a critical piece to what is expected to be a retooled offense.

Adding to the momentum, former offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy is also returning to the Chiefs this season. Both Kelce and Mahomes have spoken publicly about how excited they are to have Bieniemy back in the fold, and that reunion alone figures to provide a jolt to an offense that underperformed last year.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach acknowledged weeks ago that the organization was hopeful Kelce would return, and both he and owner Clark Hunt made clear they had no doubt Kelce could still play at an elite level. They were right to believe in him.

Season 14. One more run. Travis Kelce is back.
