Andy Reid Addresses Chiefs’ Offseason Priorities in Friday Press Conference
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid met with reporters Friday in a special media session, providing updates on several key offseason questions. The veteran coach addressed tight end Travis Kelce’s retirement decision, wide receiver Rashee Rice’s legal situation, the possibility of a Tyreek Hill reunion and recent coaching staff additions.
Communication Continues With Travis Kelce
The biggest question facing the Chiefs this offseason remains the future of tight end Travis Kelce. When asked if he had insight into Kelce’s plans, Reid emphasized the importance of ongoing dialogue.
“No, but there is communication, though,” Reid said. “That’s the main thing. I’ve said this before to you, but as long as there’s communication, that means people want to move forward. I think that’s where Trav is.”
Reid stressed that he’s giving Kelce space to make his decision after 13 seasons in the league. The tight end has contemplated retirement before, and following a disappointing 6-11 season, he’s taking time to evaluate his future.
“I’m not trying to put words in his mouth at all, and I try to give him some space here,” Reid said. “He’s been doing this a long time. He can sort all of that out as he goes forward, but we’re proceeding with that, and there is communication.”
Without Kelce, the Chiefs face a significant gap at tight end. General manager Brett Veach would need to address the position through free agency or the draft if Kelce decides to retire.
Reid Declines Comment on Rashee Rice Legal Situation
Reid was asked about wide receiver Rashee Rice, who faces a civil suit with allegations of domestic violence. The coach kept his response brief given the ongoing legal proceedings.
“I can’t comment on Rashee’s situation. It’s in law enforcement’s hands, so I can’t comment there,” Reid said.
No Update on Possible Tyreek Hill Reunion
Former Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill was recently released by the Miami Dolphins, sparking speculation about a potential return to Kansas City. Reid addressed the rumors but offered little clarity, citing Hill’s recovery from a severe knee injury.
“I don’t even know if Tyreek is healthy right now to do anything,” Reid said. “I’m sure he’s working hard on that part of it and trying to get that all straightened out. But listen, we talk about everything. There’s nothing happening there, but we know what you know—that he’s out there and cranking away, trying to get himself back to where he can play, period.”
New Coaching Staff Takes Shape
Reid discussed the Chiefs’ recent coaching additions, including wide receivers coach Chad O’Shea, running backs coach DeMarco Murray and defensive backs coach Andre Curtis.
Reid highlighted O’Shea’s Super Bowl experience with the New England Patriots and praised his track record in developing receivers.
For Murray, Reid noted his value beyond his playing experience. “I just thought his coming in in this position would be a strength to that, not only from an experience standpoint, but also the way he goes about teaching things. I think he’s a nice addition there,” Reid said.
The hiring of Curtis marked a long-awaited addition for Reid. “I’ve tried to hire Andre before when Steve [Spagnuolo] came in,” Reid said. “They’ve been together at three different places, and he’s actually worked with every member of our defensive staff and it was an easy one to plug in and go.”
Patrick Mahomes Progressing in Rehab
While not the primary focus of Friday’s session, Reid also provided an update on Patrick Mahomes, who is recovering from ACL and LCL surgery after a Week 15 injury.
“He’s around here all the time… 7 hours a day. He’s in there making progress every day,” Reid said. “Julie [Frymyer] makes sure he stays on task and challenges him… It’s not going to be a pleasant thing every day; you’ve got to fight through and attack the challenge of the rehab and workout.”
The update suggests Mahomes is fully committed to his rehabilitation as he works toward a potential Week 1 return for the 2026 season.
