Adam Schefter Gives Green Bay Packers Fans Hope With Latest Dexter Lawrence Report
The Green Bay Packers already proved they are playing for keeps when they traded for Micah Parsons. Now, it looks like general manager Brian Gutekunst might not be finished building a powerhouse defense.
Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence reportedly wants out of New York. Given Green Bay’s obvious need for a dominant presence in the middle of their defensive line, fans naturally started connecting the dots. Recently, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter poured plenty of gasoline on that speculative fire.
Adam Schefter: Green Bay Packers Could Make Another Trade

During an appearance on ESPN Milwaukee, Schefter noted that he could easily see the Green Bay Packers getting in the mix for the 28-year-old defensive tackle. The biggest hurdle for Green Bay is draft capital. The team sent their 2026 first-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys to secure Micah Parsons. Without a premium day-one pick, many assumed the Packers lacked the ammunition to land a star like Lawrence.
Schefter, however, offered a much more optimistic outlook. He suggested the asking price might hover around a second-round and fifth-round pick. He noted that trading a first-rounder for an aging defensive tackle seeking a new contract, especially one coming off a relatively down year, seems highly unlikely.
“I could see the Packers in that mix. My guess is a two and a five. That’s my sense of what it would take. I don’t know that it’s right. I had somebody suggest to me, ‘Oh, they think it would be a first-round pick.’ I don’t know that anybody is trading a first-round pick for a 28-year-old defensive tackle who wants more money who is coming off, by his standards, a down year. I don’t see that.”
This projected price tag fits Green Bay perfectly. Their first selection in the upcoming draft sits at No. 52 overall in the second round. Furthermore, they hold an extra fifth-round pick thanks to their recent trade sending Dontayvion Wicks to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Packers absolutely have the resources to make this deal happen.
Why Green Bay Needs a Defensive Anchor
The Packers are operating in a highly aggressive, win-now window. The front office is paying top-of-the-market contracts to franchise quarterback Jordan Love and their newly acquired star edge rusher. You do not push all your chips to the center of the table just to maintain the status quo.
Green Bay desperately needs a capable nose tackle to anchor the middle of their defense. While they could try to find a long-term solution with that second-round pick, the NFL Draft remains a gamble. A rookie rarely steps onto the field and dominates the line of scrimmage from day one. Trading for an established veteran guarantees immediate impact, matching the team’s accelerated Super Bowl timeline.
A Game-Changing Skill Set
Even though Lawrence is coming off a slightly disappointing season by his own lofty standards, his track record speaks for itself. The three-time Pro Bowler remains one of the premier interior defensive linemen in football.
Lawrence brings a rare combination of massive size and shocking pass-rush ability. Just a year ago, he racked up nine sacks in only 12 games. He routinely eats double teams, clogging up rushing lanes while simultaneously collapsing the pocket from the inside out.
Imagine placing Lawrence in the middle of a defensive line that already features Javon Hargrave and Devonte Wyatt. That interior trio would be a nightmare for opposing interior offensive linemen. Add Parsons rushing off the edge, and Green Bay would boast one of the most terrifying defensive fronts in the league.
Will the Packers Pull the Trigger?
Only time will tell if Gutekunst is willing to part with his top remaining draft picks to secure Lawrence. However, the logic is sound, the draft capital aligns, and the team clearly wants to win a championship right now.
Keep a close eye on the Packers as the draft approaches. If Schefter’s instincts are right, Green Bay might just pull off another massive blockbuster trade.
