New York Giants GM Signals Strong Focus on Quarterback In 2025 NFL Draft

New York Giants NFL Draft plans

The New York Giants have a lot of work to do this offseason. After making the playoffs two years ago, it has been a comedy of errors on the field. They have gone 9-25 over the past two years, and if you take out the one 9-7 season, they have gone 31-84 since 2017. A big part of their struggles is the lack of a quarterback. Last season, the team moved off of former top-ten pick Daniel Jones and currently does not have any quarterbacks under contract.

However, many have wondered if the team will focus on building the rest of the team through the draft and find a quarterback elsewhere. According to recent reports, GM Joe Schoen is signaling the team is likely taking a quarterback in the NFL Draft.

New York Giants GM Laser Focused On QB In NFL Draft

The Senior Bowl happened a couple of weeks ago and was the first opportunity for us to see how teams are evaluating prospects. Based on interviews and who they speak with throughout the weekend, we get to see what teams are focusing on which positions. ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported that Schoen “made it obvious” that the team’s primary focus is finding a quarterback in this year’s draft. While it is seen as a weaker quarterback class, this isn’t stopping the New York Giants from trying to find their future.

This isn’t necessarily a surprise. Owner John Mara made it clear in his end-of-season press conference that “obviously the number one issue for us going into this offseason.” Many have speculated the team would go after a free agent like Sam Darnold or Aaron Rodgers. However, it seems the New York Giants would rather find a young player to pair with star receiver Malik Nabers rather than pay a veteran big money. There are a couple of ways they could go about this in the draft.

Getting A Quarterback

The New York Giants have the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders are the top prospects currently. If the Titans and Browns both take a quarterback, the Giants could be left high and dry. They could look to trade with the Titans, but that would mean giving up valuable draft capital. There are also rumors that Tennessee may be looking at another player with the first overall pick. New York might be able to stay pat and still get their guy.

The other way they could do it is to look at the later rounds. This is a riskier strategy as the percentage of quarterbacks picked outside of the first round who become starters is very low. However, the team could fall in love with Jaxson Dart, Jalen Milroe, or Quinn Ewers and get them in later rounds or move back up into the first round. Whatever the case, Schoen is leaving no stone unturned. If the team is going to win, they need to get the quarterback position figured out.

Final Thoughts

In the NFL Draft process, it is sometimes good to keep your plans hidden. You want teams to have no clue what you are planning on doing, forcing them into bad deals or panic picks. However, it isn’t a secret the New York Giants need a quarterback. If they don’t sign anyone in free agency, the path forward is clear in terms of the quarterback position.
