New York Yankees Beat Texas Rangers 7-4 As Elmer Rodriguez Gets a Second Start and Yankees Keep Rolling At Home
The Yankees and Rangers just played last week. The Yankees took two of three games in that series, but were shut out 3-0 in the final game. It was their most recent loss. They beat Jacob deGrom in one of those two wins. It is difficult to beat a team, let alone a pitcher, twice in two weeks. So, it was good that the Yankees won this game 7-4.
Elmer Rodriguez started this game for the Yankees. He was not helped by walking the first three batters of the game, but he settled down and pitched 4.2 innings. Do you think he will get sent down to the minors when the Yankees call up Carlos Rodon?
Yankees and Rangers Game Summary
Rodriguez walked the first three batters. They all eventually scored. The Yanks answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger doubled back-to-back. In the second inning, Ryan McMahon hit a two-run home run. That was a huge hit that tied the game at 3.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. That gave the Yankees a 4-3 lead. Then, Bellinger had a huge two-run double. The Yankees lead 6-3. Paul Goldschmidt hit a home run, and the Yankees led 7-3. Texas scored a meaningless run in the ninth. That made it 7-4.
The Greatness Of Jacob deGrom
The Rangers’ starting pitcher tonight was deGrom. He is one of the best pitchers in the game and has been doing it for a long time. He is being talked about as a potential Hall of Famer, so the Yankees needed to be able to get him out of the game. He is 2-1 with a 2.01 earned run average.
He has been pitching since 2014. He has only 98 wins in his career, and he has battled injuries. However, when he has pitched, he has pitched well. He has a career 2.56 earned run average. He has won the Cy Young Award twice. He won the National League Cy Young Award with the New York Mets in 2018 and 2019.
Tributes For John Sterling Keep Coming
There is more to say about baseball honoring John Sterling. The legendary Yankee radio broadcaster died yesterday morning at the age of 87. His death has affected people as he was beloved. Those around the league honored Sterling’s legacy during Monday night’s slate of games. Tributes rolled in from across the league, with many play-by-play announcers deviating from their typical routines to give a nod to Sterling’s distinct style.
The Yankees Are Rolling
The Yankees just swept a four-game series from the Baltimore Orioles. This comes on the heels of the team taking two out of three games from both the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros. This was immediately after the Yankees swept the rival Boston Red Sox. They swept the Royals right before and now have the second-best record in baseball, 1.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves. The Yankees have won 11 of their last 13 games.
Update On Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole
Rodón is approaching the final checkpoint of his recovery from left elbow surgery. He is scheduled to make a Minor League rehab start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday. Rodón has made two previous rehab starts this year, allowing a run and six hits over 9.2 innings (0.93 ERA), walking one while striking out 12.
Gerrit Cole is also making a rehab start on Tuesday, pitching for High-A Hudson Valley against Winston-Salem as he recovers from Tommy John surgery performed in March 2025. He needs to stay close to the Bronx as he joins the team between starts.
Manager Aaron Boone indicated Cole remains “a little bit of a ways away” from big league action; the Yankees have forecast Cole’s return for late May or early June. Tuesday will mark Cole’s fourth Minor League rehab start; he’s posted a 4.40 ERA across 14.1 innings.
