The New York Mets have been having a miserable season as they are currently 9-19. While there are fundamental changes that need to happen, one player has officially been placed on the injured list. Let’s take a closer look as to who it is and what it means for the team going forward.

The New York Mets announced that starting pitcher Kodai Senga will be placed on the 15-day injured list with lumbar spine inflammation. Newsday’s Laura Albanese mentioned that Senga received an epidural and he will not throw at all for the next 7-10 days. This means that this stint on the injured list could be longer than the 15 days and require a rehab assignment.

Many people have been calling for the team to move on from their former ace after he has had his no-trade clause go from a blanket one to a 10-team no-trade list beginning this season.

Senga is currently in the second-to-last year of his five-year, $75 million contract he signed ahead of the 2023 season. He has been unable to get much going throughout the 2026 season and was potentially going to be sent down to Triple-A Syracuse with his performance thus far. In five starts this season, he is 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA and a 1.95 WHIP in 20.0 innings.

In the corresponding move, pitcher Christian Scott has been called up and will replace Senga in the rotation. Below is the current starting rotation for the New York Mets for the time being:

  • Nolan McLean
  • Clay Holmes
  • David Peterson
  • Freddy Peralta
  • Christian Scott

With all the potential issues with the team, it will be exciting to see what happens next for the Mets one month into the season. There are a lot of changes that still can happen, whether the franchise wants to begin selling off players or simply add to try to turn things around for the team.
