Detroit Lions Taking Cautious Approach With Brian Branch After Achilles Injury

Detroit Lions Brian Branch

The Detroit Lions are making it clear they are not going to rush star defensive back Brian Branch back onto the field following his devastating Achilles injury last season.

While there have been no reported setbacks in Branch’s recovery, head coach Dan Campbell emphasized this week that the organization is focused on the long-term picture rather than trying to force an early return during offseason workouts or training camp.

That cautious mindset speaks volumes about how valuable Branch has become to Detroit’s defense.

Detroit Lions Dan Campbell Makes Stance On Branch Clear

Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch (32) intercepts a pass intended for Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin (14) during the first half at Ford Field in Detroit on Sunday, September 15, 2024.

Campbell addressed Branch’s status while speaking to reporters and made it clear the Lions are intentionally widening the recovery timeline.

“Let’s just go ahead and say December. Anything before that is a bonus.”

It was a notable statement from Campbell, especially considering there had been some speculation that Branch could potentially return sometime during training camp or early in the regular season.

Instead, Detroit appears committed to making sure the former Alabama standout is fully healthy before putting him back on the field.

Campbell also acknowledged there is at least a possibility Branch could begin the season on the PUP list, though no final decision has been made.

Brian Branch Has Become One of Detroit’s Most Important Defenders

The Lions’ patience makes sense when considering just how important Branch has become to the defense in such a short amount of time.

The former second-round pick quickly emerged as one of Detroit’s most versatile playmakers after entering the league in 2023. Before suffering the Achilles injury in Week 14 last season, Branch had already established himself as one of the tone-setters in Kelvin Sampson’s defense.

In just 12 games during the 2025 season, Branch recorded:

  • 75 tackles
  • 9 passes defended
  • 5 quarterback hits

His ability to play safety, nickel corner, and blitz off the edge gives Detroit a unique weapon few defenses possess.

Lions Thinking Long-Term With Brian Branch

The Achilles injury occurred during a win over the Dallas Cowboys when Branch landed awkwardly while attempting to break up a pass in the end zone.

Since then, Detroit has remained optimistic about his recovery process, but the organization clearly understands the risks of bringing him back too soon from one of football’s most difficult injuries.

Branch is also eligible for a contract extension entering the final year of his rookie deal, making his long-term health even more important for the franchise.

The Lions believe they have a championship-caliber roster in 2026. Because of that, making sure Branch is fully healthy for the stretch run, and beyond, matters far more than pushing him through offseason practices prematurely.
