Chiefs Sign Former 49ers RB Elijah Mitchell to 1-Year Deal

Kansas City Chiefs Elijah Mitchell

The Kansas City Chiefs continue making moves in free agency, securing another offensive piece. They adding another former San Francisco 49er, this time being running back Elijah Mitchell who joins the Chiefs on a one-year deal worth up to $3.5 million, per Jordan Schultz.

The Chiefs continue to make moves to address the depth in their offensive backfield. Especially after this past season with their top running back, Isiah Pacehco having to miss most of the season due to injury. Then having to rely on older backs in Kareem Hunt and Samaje Perine, who both have hit the free agency market, the team needed to bring in some fresh reinforcements.

Elijah Mitchell’s Injury History and Potential Impact

Now with that being said, although Mitchell does have an injury history of his own, he has shown consistent flashes when healthy. However, the concern still remains with him being able to stay healthy as he’s coming off missing the entire 2024 season due to a hamstring injury and because of it, he’s been limited with his knees throughout his career.

Despite his injury history, Mitchell made an early impact as a rookie in 2021, setting a 49ers rookie rushing record with 923 yards in just 11 games. Kansas City hopes he can regain that form in a change-of-pace role behind Pacheco.

Chiefs’ Strategy in Free Agency

Kansas City has now signed two former 49ers in free agency, with Mitchell joining offensive tackle Jaylon Moore. The Chiefs continue looking for value signings to reinforce key positions ahead of the 2025 season.

Although with this move, the Chiefs have been able to buy themselves some leeway, the team will more than likely continue exploring options at the running back position. A reunion with Hunt or Perine remains possible, and the upcoming NFL Draft could yield another addition.

Final Thoughts

Kansas City is taking a calculated risk with Mitchell, banking on his potential when he is healthy. His explosiveness and vision could complement Pacheco well, provided he can stay on the field.

Kansas City’s work in free agency isn’t done, but Mitchell’s signing adds another experienced option. If he can recapture his early-career form, this deal could be a bargain for the Kansas City Chiefs.
