The Kansas City Chiefs have found their newest backup quarterback for Patrick Mahomes. Former Las Vegas Raiders signal-caller Gardner Minshew has agreed to a one-year deal with the team.
Minshew, entering his seventh NFL season, will step into the QB2 role behind one of the league’s most reliable starters. His signing signals the end of Carson Wentz’s short stint in Las Vegas.
Gardner Minshew’s Release and Injury Concerns
Minshew became available after the Raiders designated him as a post-June 1 cut. His release came with a failed physical designation, raising concerns about his health.
The veteran quarterback suffered a fractured collarbone during a Week 12 game against the Denver Broncos. That injury sidelined him for the rest of the 2024 season.
A Proven Backup with Starting Experience
Despite his recent setback, Minshew remains one of the most experienced backup quarterbacks in the league. He started nine games for the Raiders last season, throwing for 2,013 yards and nine touchdowns.
However, turnovers were an issue, as he finished the year with 10 interceptions. Kansas City will hope he can provide stability behind Mahomes while limiting mistakes when called upon.
Why Kansas City Made This Move
With the Chiefs making this addition, they add to their ranks a veteran that has multiple years of starting experience in this league. He’s been exposed to several different offensive systems throughout his career, making him a reliable insurance option if the moment ever arrises.
Although Mahomes for much of his career has shown that he is one of the more durable quarterbacks in the NFL, he has battled through multiple ankle injuries. The most recent one is coming this past season. Having a capable backup ensures the Chiefs will be prepared in case of any unexpected circumstances.
Final Thoughts
The Chiefs front office continues to waste any time securing depth across the team, with this most recent move providing Mahomes with a backup for the 2025 season. With Minshew’s familiarity in the AFC West, he could also become a valuable advantage off the field for scouting and gameplan purposes as well.
However, his health does remain a point of concern, if he is able to recover ahead of the upcoming season fully, then the Chiefs have landed a solid option behind Mahomes.
