The Chicago Bears had one glaring weakness last year: pass protection. Rookie quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked an NFL-high 68 times last season. While some of it was on the quarterback, the pass protection left a lot to be desired. GM Ryan Pace made it clear going into the offseason that this was a part of their team they needed to fix. He has never been shy about engaging in trades, and Pace pulled off another on Tuesday. The Bears are reportedly acquiring veteran lineman Jonah Jackson from the Los Angeles Rams.
Chicago Bears Acquire Jonah Jackson
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the trade that cannot be officially completed until March 12. The Chicago Bears are sending a 2025 sixth-round pick to the Rams. Jonah Jackson signed a three-year, $51 million extension last offseason, and Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reports the Bears will be taking on the contract. He is due $9 million in 2025 and $17 million (non-guaranteed) next year.
This is a huge win for the Chicago Bears. New head coach Ben Johnson knows the value of investing in the offensive line. The Detroit Lions spent years building up their line, and now they have one of the best in the league. It has allowed them to have a devastating run game while also allowing Jared Goff to carve up opposing defenses. Johnson hopes he can duplicate this with Williams and the Bears’ offense.
More Moves To Come?
The Chicago Bears will likely continue to try and augment this roster. They have the biggest advantage in sports: a starting quarterback on a rookie contract. While last season did not go the way many had hoped, there were plenty of bright spots. With better coaching and upgrades at key positions, the Bears could make a push for the playoffs in the NFC. It won’t be easy because of their division, but they have acquired a lot of talent over the past three years.
The Bears have been heavily rumored to be in the market for another wide receiver. Last year, they traded for Keenan Allen, and while they still could re-sign him, reports indicate they are looking elsewhere. Amari Cooper is a name that has been thrown around as a veteran option. In addition, Chicago may try to upgrade their running back position and the defensive line. They have some high picks in the upcoming NFL Draft but are looking in free agency as well.
Final Thoughts
This offseason has been full of positive news for the Chicago Bears. Landing Ben Johnson was huge, and this trade for Jonah Jackson is also a step in the right direction. They needed some help on the line, and they got it for a cheap price. Draft capital is valuable, but giving up a sixth-round pick for a starting offensive lineman is usually good business. What moves will be next from the Windy City?
