Report Suggests Bo Bichette Could Leave Mets After Just One Season
Bo Bichette may not be in Queens for long.
According to a report from USA Today insider Bob Nightengale, teams around Major League Baseball reportedly expect the New York Mets third baseman to opt out of his contract following the 2026 season, despite signing a three-year deal just months ago.
The situation creates a fascinating storyline for the Mets moving forward, especially considering Bichette’s uneven first season in New York.
Bo Bichette Reportedly Expected to Opt Out of Mets Contract

Bo Bichette signed with the Mets during the offseason after spending the first seven years of his career with the Toronto Blue Jays.
His contract includes player options for the 2027 and 2028 seasons worth a combined $84 million, according to Spotrac. Nightengale reported Bichette is making just $2 million in salary this season after already receiving a massive $40 million signing bonus.
The deal also reportedly includes another $5 million payment if he chooses to opt out. While the structure gave Bichette flexibility, it now appears there is a legitimate possibility both sides could move on after only one season together.
Bichette’s Production Has Been Mixed in New York
Although Bichette leads the Mets with 40 RBIs, his overall production has been somewhat underwhelming compared to expectations.
The former All-Star has hit only eight home runs while posting a .236 batting average, currently one of the lowest marks of his MLB career. Defensively, there have also been issues.
Bichette committed seven errors this season, including several while filling in at shortstop due to injuries involving Francisco Lindor and Ronny Mauricio.
That inconsistency could make his opt-out decision far more complicated than originally expected.
Phillies Could Re-Emerge if Bichette Hits Free Agency
One interesting wrinkle in the report involves the Philadelphia Phillies. Nightengale noted Philadelphia could pursue Bichette again if he returns to free agency. Phillies president Dave Dombrowski openly admitted the organization was devastated when Bichette chose the Mets over Philadelphia during the offseason.
“It’s a gut punch,” Dombrowski said at the time.
Despite the underwhelming numbers this season, Bichette still carries significant name value around the league because of his offensive upside and track record in Toronto.
Mets Could Face Major Decision With Bo Bichette
At this point, the situation feels like a gamble for everyone involved. If Bichette opts out, he risks entering free agency after one of the weakest statistical seasons of his career. If he stays, the Mets would be committing major money to a player who has yet to fully meet expectations in New York.
Either way, this is quickly becoming one of the more intriguing contract situations looming over the MLB offseason.
