Jun 7, 2026; Bronx, New York, USA; New York Yankees starting pitcher Cam Schlittler (31) reacts after retiring the side in the fifth inning against the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees beat the Red Sox 6-1. They got a great start from American League Cy Young favorite Cam Schlittler. They also got timely late home runs from Cody Bellinger and Jazz Chisholm Jr. Those two home runs were in the eighth inning, when the Yankees scored five runs.

The Yankees needed a win in this game more than they have needed to win other games this season. Not only is this a win in two days after they got the horrible news of the Aaron Judge injury. He will be out for more than a month. They have also lost the last two starts of their new ace Cam Schlittler. The Yankees head to Cleveland. How many games do you think they will win?

The Yankees got a timely win in this game by scoring five runs in the eighth inning of a 1-1 tie. The team got timely home runs from Goldschmidt and Chisholm Jr. Here is how the game played out.

In the fifth inning, Paul Goldschmidt singled, and Jose Caballero scored. It was 1-0 Yankees. Boston tied the game in the sixth inning when Willson Contreras doubled, and Ceddanne Rafaela scored. The game stayed tied at one as both the Pinstrpe starting pitcher and the Boston Red Sox starting pitcher, Ranger Suarez, pitched very well.

However, the Bronx Bombers exploded for five runs in the eighth inning. First, Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run home run. Then, Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a three-run home run. Those home runs were aided by walks and some timely hitting. The Yankees’ bullpen pitched well as they did not allow a run.

This victory for the Bombers was combined with good starting pitching from Schlittler and a couple of timely eigth inning home runs. This is the formula they will have to use going forward as they adjust to life without Aaron Judge. The injury to Judge is not a death sentence; the team probably needs to play .500 baseball the rest of the season to make the playoffs.

Catcher Moves

In a somewhat confusing set of moves in the last twenty-four hours. The team first demoted backup catcher JC Escarra. As fans thought they would not see him anymore, the Yanks then placed starting cathcher Austin Wells on the Injured List with cervical headaches. Wells, too, has been awful this season; maybe the injury explains his struggles.

The team then recalled JC Escarra, and because a roster spot was opened up with Wells going on the Injured List, the Yankees promoted Ali Sánchez. Sanchez was in the starting lineup today, though he did not have a hit; he did make his major league debut. Sanchez provides the team with an interesting option. He bats right-handed while Escarra and Wells, for that matter, are left-handed.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Yankees won this game 6-1. Cam Schlittler was the player of the game. He pitched 5 2/3 innings while only giving up one run. He did not win this game because he left with the score tied. The Bombers scored their runs after he, and Suarez, for that matter, left the game. There is no rest for the weary. The Yankees play in Cleveland, against the Guardians, tomorrow at 6:40 pm. The Boston Red Sox play tomorrow in Tampa Bay against the Rays.

Conclusion

Speaking of the Rays, they are ice cold. They lost again today, and the Yankees are now virtually tied with them atop the American League East division standings. Many people thought the Rays would collapse because they play poor defense and have a small positive run differential. On the flip side, the pitch well, and that has a way of keeping a team in contention.
