The WNBA season is getting closer to beginning, but there is some news surrounding the Connecticut Sun that is major. The Mohegan Tribe has sold the franchise to the Fertitta family, which will cause some major shifts in the league. Let’s take a closer look at what this means for the Connecticut Sun and the WNBA as a whole.

The Connecticut Sun are being relocated to Houston in 2027

The Connecticut Sun have been one of the staples in the WNBA since their addition in 2023. However, things are changing. ESPN’s Alex Philippou is reporting that the franchise has been sold to the Fertitta family for $300 million. As a result, the franchise will be relocated from Connecticut to Houston and renamed to the Comets, bringing back an old franchise.

The Fertitta family are also the owner of the Houston Rockets in the NBA, so this makes sense to relocate the team to one of the bigger media markets in the United States. The franchise will remain in Connecticut for the 2026 WNBA season before being relocated after the year concludes. As of this writing, the Connecticut Sun have not started anything about the purchase.

There were preliminary rumors that the franchise would move to Boston, but it appears that is not going to be happening. This could be something an expansion team does in the future, but the Sun are going to move across the country.

This should be a chance for the Sun to be a competitive team in free agency, as it is easier to attract free agents to Houston than to Connecticut. While it is not 100% known where they will wind up playing their home games in 2027, there is a chance they will play in the Toyota Center, being one of six teams to play in an NBA arena. This also means there will be two WNBA teams in Texas, joining the Dallas Wings.

With the number of free agents who are available this offseason, could they sign a multi-year contract with the Connecticut Sun and swallow playing in Connecticut for this year? It is certainly going to be intriguing to follow as more information.
