Victor Wembanyama Makes NBA History with 42 Points

Victor Wembanyama

San Antonio Spurs Center Victor Wembanyama made NBA history in the team’s 133-126 win over the Atlanta Hawks in an overtime thriller at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas, on Thursday evening. Wembanyama, 20, scored 42 points, which helped the Spurs to a highlight-filled overtime win over the Hawks. Wembanyama’s amazing performance helped make this Spurs vs. Hawks game one of the most exciting games so far this season.

Wembanyama led the Spurs in scoring with 42 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Wembanyama’s not only leading the stat lines in San Antonio though. He’s also proving the so-called haters wrong by reminding the general public his positives could outweigh his negatives, also known as flaws. Read on for Wembanyama’s latest achievement on the court.

Victor Wembanyama Makes NBA History

On Thursday night, Victor Wembanyama made NBA history in the San Antonio Spurs’ 133-126 overtime win over the Atlanta Hawks at the AT&T Center. Wembanyama led the Spurs’ scoring with 42 points (including seven three-pointers), six rebounds, five assists, four blocks, and two steals.

Victor Wenbanyama’s 42 points were his highest point total since he buried the Washington Wizards with a 50-point explosion on November 13. Victor Wembanyama became the first player in NBA history to reach these numbers in a single game. He dealt with a sore back, which led to a two-game absence, but has since returned to the court by averaging 28.8 points, 8.8 boards, 4.5 assists, 4.0 blocks, 3.3 threes, and 0.8 steals over his last four contests.

Atlanta Hawks Stumble On Offense

Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs prevailed in Thursday night’s overtime game against Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks. Of course, Wembanyama’s stellar 42-point performance wasn’t the only factor in the win over the Hawks. The Hawks also stumbled on its offense, as the offense stagnated with the ball spending too much time on the perimeter and the team’s turnovers quickly piled up after a solid first quarter.

The Hawks led by as many as 11 points before San Antonio’s strong finish to cut the lead to six points to close out the first half of the game. The Hawks’ perimeter players shined early in the fourth quarter, but Wembanyama responded by getting closer to the basket. Wembanyama’s response to the Hawks overshadowed his missed three-pointer as De’Andre Hunter dunked on him after the timeout to force the game into overtime.

Wembanyama Tunes Out the Negativity

Victor Wembanyama has been dominating on the court, but his stellar performances haven’t impressed everyone. There will always be the haters, but Victor Wembanyama appears to tune out the negativity well. Take, for example, ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith’s belief that Wembanyama is presented as too one-dimensional as just a shot-blocker and dunker when he excels at almost everything.

Smith, 57, said on air on Friday morning, “Why the hell are we always making a damn big deal of this man dunking the ball? … Show me his ball handling! Show me that three-point shot that he’s been sniping all over the place! Show me his passing ability! Show me his shot-blocking!” Smith’s question contains strong words, but Smith clearly made his point clear, as Wembanyama is a force in the paint, but also can score virtually anywhere.

The Spurs will wrap up their three-game homestand with the third and final game against the Portland Trail Blazers at the AT&T Center on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Central. San Antonio will enter the home game with a 14-13 record and a search for a two-game winning streak, while Portland will arrive with a lowly 9-18 record and seek a rare two-game win streak after a 126-124 win over the Denver Nuggets at the Moda Center on Thursday night.
