Veteran Safety Micah Hyde Announces Retirement

Hyde

Veteran Safety Micah Hyde announced his retirement from the National Football League on Tuesday after playing 11 seasons in the league. He played four with the Green Bay Packers and seven as a member of the Buffalo Bills. He suffered a neck injury in 2022 which limited him to two games that season and ultimately derailed his career. Hyde returned for the 2023 season and played 14 games and helped Buffalo during its playoff run.

He was a free agent following the 2023-2024 season and said that he wanted to re-sign with the Buffalo Bills or retire, but teams were not knocking down the veteran’s door. The safety remained unsigned until the Buffalo Bills signed him to the practice squad in December 2024. He never suited up this season, and Hyde signed his retirement papers a day after Buffalo’s season ended in the AFC Championship Game against the Kansas City Chiefs. How will Hyde’s career be remembered?

Hyde’s Career Stats

Hyde was drafted in the fifth round of the NFL Draft out of Iowa by the Green Bay Packers. He was named Second Team All-Pro twice(2017, 2021) and to the Pro Bowl in 2017. He finished his career with 644 total tackles, 24 interceptions, and 4 forced fumbles.

The now-retired safety retired a member of the Buffalo Bills and has always spoken highly of his time with the team. In his retirement video, Hyde included a quote that said, “I will always be thankful for this place. I’ll always be thankful for Sean[McDermott] bringing me here…”

Final Thoughts

Even though Hyde was not able to bring a Super Bowl to Buffalo, it does not undercut his contributions to the franchise. He preceded Josh Allen in Buffalo and was part of one of the best eras in Bills team history. Buffalo was a consistent contender during the safety’s tenure, but they could never break through. The Kansas City Chiefs consistently stopped the Bills from reaching their ultimate goal.
