St. John’s Wins Big East Regular Season Title For First Time In 4 Decades

St. John's

The St. John’s Red Storm made history on Saturday against Seton Hall at Madison Square Garden. The Red Storm prevailed 71-61  to clinch the Big East regular season title for the first time since 1985. They clinched at least a share of the regular season title on Wednesday and then won the outright title on their first opportunity. Can St. John’s Head Coach Rick Pitino lead the team on a March run to remember?

St. John’s Season Summary

The Red Storm have been one of the nation’s best teams this season. They are 26-4 and have won 15 of their last 16 contests. The team has been so successful with an offense that has struggled at times. They are 68th in points per game, 176th in field goal percentage, and 343rd in three-point percentage. It is a positive for the team heading into postseason play that their offense has played much better as of late.

St. John’s has been paced by its defense this season. They are 30th in points allowed, 18th in opposing field goal percentage, and 121st in opposing three-point percentage. An improved offense coupled with a great defense will make the Red Storm a force to be reckoned with in March.

Final Thoughts

The Red Storm finish the regular season on the road against No. 21 Marquette next Saturday. The Big East Conference Tournament will take place from March 12-15 at Madison Square Garden. If St. John’s can win the conference tournament, a top two seed in the 2025 NCAA Tournament is plausible. Pitino is one of the best coaches in college basketball history. He will have his squad prepared better than any team in the field.
