The Pittsburgh Pirates signed Starting Pitcher Andrew Heaney to a one-year contract on Thursday night. Heaney’s deal is reportedly worth a maximum of $5 million including incentives. He is coming off one of the worst seasons of his career in 2024 with the Texas Rangers.
Heaney finished with a miserable 5-14 record and a 4.28 ERA. He was a crucial part of a Texas Rangers team that won the World Series in 2024. He was 1-0 with a 4.09 ERA over the playoff run. Unfortunately, he was unable to follow it up last season. Will Heaney be able to get on track with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2025?

Heaney joins a Pirates starting high-powered rotation. Reigning Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes looks to pitch just as well in his sophomore campaign and Jared Jones and Mitch Keller are also solid pitchers as well. Pittsburgh’s starting rotation was middling last season. They were 20th in ERA, 18th in strikeouts, and 24th in opposing batting average.
Pittsburgh’s offense will be led by Right Fielder Bryan Reynolds and Outfielder Oneil Cruz. The Pittsburgh Pirates offense was not very strong in 2024. They were 23rd in batting average, 25th in home runs, and 24th in runs scored. The Pirates are looking to break a nine-year playoff drought. They have a solid roster as they look to succeed in 2025.
Final Thoughts
Heaney will look to get going in 2025 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He joins a starting rotation that should be one of the league’s best this season. If Heaney can rekindle his old form, it will bode well for the club this season.
