Rangers Rout Capitals In Devastating 8-1 Loss, As Playoff Chances Fade

Apr 5, 2026; New York, New York, USA; Washington Capitals left wing Brandon Duhaime (22) is hit by New York Rangers right wing Jaroslav Chmelar (49) during the third period at Madison Square Garden.

On a night where the Washington Capitals really needed a big win, instead, they took a 7-point loss to the New York Rangers on April 5. While the Capitals aren’t necessarily out of the playoff race, they are well down to 6.3% in the odds of taking a wild-card spot. They are now three points behind third-place Philadelphia Flyers in the Metropolitan Division, and three spots behind.

The Rangers, meanwhile, are well out of playoff contention, making this the second lower-ranked team that the Capitals have lost to in the past few weeks. The main issue lay with defense, as usual; goalie Logan Thompson did not play after blocking 37 shots against the Buffalo Sabers on April 4.

Charlie Lindgren saved 24 shots in Thompson’s place, while the New York goalie, Igor Shesterkin, saved 20 shots. It was a game full of penalties and fighting. Connor McMicheal scored Washington’s lone goal, while Will Cuylle had a hat trick for New York. Adam Fox, J.T. Miller, Vincent Trocheck, Adam Sýkora, and Connor Sheary also scored for the Rangers.

Rangers And Capitals Have A Competitive First Period

The game didn’t start out as a Capitals massacre. Even though Sheary scored 23 seconds in, assisted by Tye Kartye and Fox, Washington didn’t let it get to their heads. They settled into their structure and pushed back with controlled zone time. The early goal became a spark, not a setback.

McMichael scored the 12th goal of his season at 13:45, assisted by Tom Wilson and Martin Fehérváry. No one else scored in the first period, and the score was tied 1-1. Shots on goal were also tied at 7-7.

Capitals Rout Begins In The Second Period

Lindgren, who hadn’t started a game since March 12, and the Washington defense began to show cracks early on in the second period. Miller scored at 3:07, assisted by Mika Zibanejad and Fox. After a few more furious minutes of play at 5:57, Cuylle scored his first goal of the night, with Braden Schneider and Johnny Brodzinski getting the assist. The score went to 3-1, Rangers.

The Capitals did get two shots off after that, but Cuylle scored quite literally right out of the penalty box at 8:33, assisted by Trocheck and Vladislav Gladikov. After another few minutes of the Capitals being unable to score, Sýkora got past Lindgren with assistance from Noah Laba and Jaroslav Chmelar at 13:22.

Cuylle and Jakob Chychrun fought at 17:12, earning themselves 5 minutes in the penalty box each. Fox scored at 18:27, with assistance from Zibanajed and Miller. That made the score 6-1, Rangers, at the end of the second period. New York also outshot Washington 15-7 on goals in the period, 22-14 in the game.

Third Period Seals The Blowout Win For The Rangers

Trocheck scored unassisted just 2:27 into the third period. At one point, the Capitals’ Matt Roy had a shot blocked by a teammate. They were struggling so badly. Washington Captain Alex Ovechkin was clearly frustrated, as he had two hits in a short period of time and was visibly upset on the bench. He only recorded two shots on goal throughout the whole night.

Laba and Hendrix Lapierre each spent 5 minutes in the penalty box for fighting at 15:36. Cuylle scored his first NHL hat-trick with just 32 seconds left in the game, a huge game for him. It capped off a night where momentum swung hard in New York’s favor.

The game ended 8-1 to the Rangers, with New York outshooting Washington 10-7 on goal in the third period and 32-21 for the game. The Rangers went 2-for-4 on power plays to the Capitals’ 0-for-3, and New York won 65% of the game’s face-offs.

Team Reactions

“We’ve got some defensive issues through the last, call it, dozen games,” said Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery after the game. “We’ve been able to cover it up with some goaltending performances, some high scoring games, getting fortunate in some games, but if you look under the hood of what we’re giving up on a nightly, pretty consistent basis, we’ve got to correct some things defensively, for sure.”

Forward Aliaksei Protas had some more negative words to say about Washington’s performance. “This game today, I can say it was embarrassing. It can’t be like that at this time of the year.” His analysis is spot on. The Rangers, meanwhile, were thrilled with their game.

Head coach Mike Sullivan was especially impressed with Cuylle’s hat trick, especially since Gabe Perrault had pulled off the same feat on April 4. “It’s hard to score in this league. You get the opportunity to score a hat trick. It’s a big deal for a player and means a lot to them. I think it means a lot to our whole team when a player accomplishes it.

“So doing it back-to-back for our group has been great. ”The Capitals will play the Toronto Maple Leafs on the road on April 8, while the Rangers will play the playoff-bound Buffalo Sabres at home on April 8,” he said.

What’s Next

New York closed the night with confidence, and Washington never found a way to counter the late surge. The final minutes underscored the gap in execution, and Cuylle’s hat‑trick sealed a result that felt inevitable by the end. It was a game defined by early discipline, late breakdowns, and one team capitalizing when it mattered most.
