NHL Draft Lottery: Washington Capitals Draw Important 16th Rank, Look To Strengthen Team

Washington Capitals defenseman Cole Hutson (44) controls the puck, vs. Colorado Avalanche

On May 5, 2026, the lottery for the 2026 NHL Draft was announced, and the Toronto Maple Leafs took the first draft pick in a key moment for their future Stanley Cup Playoff prospects. In a list of 16 made up of non-qualified teams for the playoffs, the Washington Capitals took the 16th overall pick over playoff teams. This was an important moment for them.

Draft Gives Capitals Chance to Bolster Roster Offensively

There are a few key gaps in the Capitals’ roster that need to be filled, and one is the possibility of the retirement of legendary Forward Alex Ovechkin. He has done everything a player could do in the NHL. If he does retire, a draft pick of a star or at least a strong forward would be vital to the Capitals’ success in the 2026-2027 season.

However, after the Capitals missed out on the 2026 playoffs in April, Ovechkin changed his tune publicly and said that he would consider coming back. His former teammate, TJ Oshie, reported that he thought that “The Great 8” would return following a private conversation.

Even if Ovechkin does return, getting a young, promising forward signed on for next season will be an important element for the team. Ovechkin is slowing down quite a bit, and though he did score 32 goals during the 2025-2026 season, he is not nearly as good as he was in his prime.

The Capitals have two first-round draft picks, one of their own and one as a result of trading veteran John Carlson to the Anaheim Ducks back on March 5. The Ducks did make the playoffs (and are currently down 0-1 to the Vegas Golden Knights in the second round), so their first-round pick goes to the Capitals. They did lose their third-round pick to the Los Angeles Kings as a result of a trade earlier in the season.

The last time the Capitals notched a top-16 pick in the first round of the NHL Draft, back in 2012, they selected top player Tom Wilson. He, along with Ovechkin, is one of the last players standing on the roster from the 2018 Stanley Cup team.

Top 2026 Draft Prospects For the Capitals

The two selections for the Capitals are a huge boon for a team that thrived off of new blood in the second half of the 2025-2026 season. The team rebounded in March and April to nearly make the playoffs.

The Capitals would most benefit from a forward, left wing, or right wing, as they have strong defenesmen and centers. Top draft prospect Gavin McKenna would fit the bill, but he will likely be taken by the Maple Leafs right away.

Further down in the draft prospects, players such as Ethan Belchetz, JP Hurlbert, Oscar Hemming, and Adam Novotny stand out as top left wing options from North America. Among international players, Marcus Nordmark, Simas Ignatavicius, and Vilho Vanhatalo stand out.

The Capitals are a fairly international program, with several Russians (including Ovechkin himself) and many Canadians on their roster. Younger players between the ages of 19 and 22 would thrive in their current era, which combines veterans such as Wilson and Ovechkin with young, promising players such as Cole Hutson, Justin Sourdif, and Ilya Protas.

Past Draft Successes

In the past, the Capitals haven’t needed first-round draft picks to gain valuable players. Hutson, a star defenseman who scored in his first NHL game on March 18, was the 11th pick of the second round of the 2024 draft. Protas, whose older brother Aliaksei plays on the team, scored 4 points and a goal in the few games that he played during the 2025-2026 season. He was the 10th pick of the third round in 2024.

Those are just a few examples of how the Capitals have managed to turn lower draft picks into contributors. Having two first-round picks will be an asset for their run at a return to the playoffs in the 2026-2027 season.
