New York Islanders Offseason 2026 News: Bridgeport Triumphant, and Getting Stronger With Reinforcements and new Signings
The Islanders have had a great deal of offseason news in the past few days. They may not be in the playoffs, but they are making waves. The most important piece of news from the past few days is that Semyon Varlamov started in goal against, and he won 2-1. However, that is not the only good news for the Islanders organization.
The Bridgeport Islanders ended their regular season in fourth place. That is a far cry from the last-place finish the team generated last season. They made the playoffs and will host the Hershey Bears, their opponent from last night. They have done this with a late-season push powered by some key reinforcements.
Many of these reinforcements will play for Bridgeport in the playoffs. Do you think the rise in the fortune of their American Hockey League team means future success for the Islanders?
Bridgeport Islanders Make Playoffs As Season Ends In Victory

The Bridgeport Islanders defeated the Hershey Bears last night 2-1. The teams will play in the first round of the playoffs, and Bridgeport will host. The starting goaltender for the last game of the regular season for the team was Varlamov. In his second, and final, start for the American Hockey League team, he stopped 27 of 28 shots against and won his second game in the minors.
He will not be able to play in the playoffs, but the other recent additions to the Bridgeport roster will. Islanders 2025 first-round Victor Eklund and Cole Eiserman will play. Furthermore, the big club has loaned Callum Ritchie to Bridgeport. Ritchie played almost the entire season in the National Hockey League (NHL). He will definitely help. Eiserman is a sniper who had nine points in seven games for Bridgeport. Eklund made his much-heralded debut in the NHL in the last game of the season for the parent club.
With these additions, the club is in very good shape. They are in such good shape that they are a dark horse to win the Calder Cup. The major concern for the team is their goaltending. They are hurt by Varlamov not being able to play with them in the playoffs.
Daniil Prokhorov
The second round Islanders 2025 draft pick was signed by the team over the weekend, and he played for Bridgeport last night. The 6-foot-6-inch forward just played a season in Russia, and he was the 42nd player chosen overall in the 2025 draft. Prokhorov scored 13 goals and had 12 assists. That was good for 25 points across 56 games in three Russian leagues. He was the VHL Rookie of the Month in January of 2026.
With his signing, the Islanders have now signed their top five 2025 draft picks (Schaefer, Eklund, Eiserman, Aitcheson, and Prokorov). Aitcheson is currently in the playoffs with the Barrie Colts. He will join the team next season, but not in Bridgeport.
Moving From Bridgeport to Hamilton, Ontario
Big changes are coming to the American Hockey League affiliate of the New York Islanders next season. The team is moving from Bridgeport to Hamilton, Ontario. Though the move is bittersweet, there are three good reasons for it.
Bridgeport, despite hosting the team for 25 years, never fully captured a strong local fan base. Second, there is the question of the team’s performance. The team struggled on the ice in recent seasons, and under the new management of General Manager Mathieu Darche, there is a turnaround afoot. Third, Hamilton’s TD Coliseum seats 18,000 people in hockey-crazed Canada.
