Trent McDuffie Dealt From Kansas City Chiefs To Los Angeles Rams In Blockbuster Deal

Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Trent McDuffie (22) celebrates after an interception

When the Kansas City Chiefs went 6-11 in 2025, nobody was expecting a quiet offseason. Patrick Mahomes went down with a torn ACL. The playoffs happened without them. The dynasty hit a wall so hard it left a dent. So yeah, change was coming. But trading Trent McDuffie? That one hurts.

On Wednesday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport confirmed what the rumor mill had been grinding toward for days: Kansas City is shipping McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams. In return, the Chiefs land the No. 29 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, a fifth-rounder, a sixth-rounder, and a 2027 third-round pick. McDuffie, per sources, is expected to sign a long-term extension with his new team.

Who Is Trent McDuffie and Why Does This Trade Matter

If you’ve spent the last three years watching NFL football, you already know the answer. McDuffie was selected 21st overall out of Washington in the 2022 Draft, and he wasted absolutely zero time proving that pick was a steal.

First-Team All-Pro in 2023. Second-Team All-Pro in 2024. At just 25 years old, he was already one of the best cornerbacks in the entire league. Not one of the better young ones. One of the best, period.

Last season, a knee injury limited him to 13 games, but he still racked up 63 tackles, 7 pass deflections, an interception, and a sack before landing on injured reserve. When healthy, McDuffie is the kind of corner that makes opposing coordinators lose sleep on Saturday nights.

What the Chiefs Get Back

Kansas City isn’t doing this because they want to. They’re doing it because a 6-11 season has a way of forcing your hand. After Mahomes’ ACL tear and a roster that looked uneven on both sides of the ball, the front office is clearly prioritizing a rebuild — or at minimum, a serious reload. Restructuring Mahomes’ contract earlier this offseason created some breathing room. Trading McDuffie adds draft capital to work with.

It’s eerily similar to what happened in 2022, when Kansas City shipped Tyreek Hill to Miami for a massive haul of picks. That move looked painful at the time. It ended up paying off in ways most people didn’t anticipate. Whether this one follows the same script remains to be seen. But the Chiefs know what they’re doing. They’ve earned that benefit of the doubt.

Why the Rams Are Absolutely Thrilled Right Now

Los Angeles watched their secondary get torched in the NFC Championship Game. Sam Darnold and company carved them up like a Thanksgiving turkey, and everyone in the building knew cornerback was the most glaring hole on the roster heading into the offseason.

Then Rams GM Les Snead, in what might be the most perfectly timed quote in recent NFL history, told The Athletic the day before this deal broke: “Is there an All-Pro that you could add? That would be nice.” 24 hours later, he had one.

McDuffie will also be reuniting with Jimmy Lake, now the Rams’ pass game coordinator and defensive backs coach. He is the same man who coached him at Washington. Sometimes things just line up.

Sean McVay has the quarterback in Matthew Stafford, the weapons with Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, and now a legitimate shutdown corner to anchor a defense that already had plenty of talent. The Rams, who still own the 13th pick in this draft, are building toward something real.

What Happens Next For Both Teams

For Kansas City, the focus shifts to the rest of the offseason. Cornerback Jaylen Watson is set to hit free agency next week, and additional roster moves are expected as the front office continues reshaping the team around a healthy Mahomes.

For Los Angeles, the McDuffie trade signals that the window is open and they intend to climb through it. McDuffie is expected to sign a long-term extension, giving the Rams a cornerstone piece in their secondary for years to come. After watching their pass defense fall apart on the biggest stage, they went out and fixed the problem decisively.

One team is planting seeds. The other is ready to harvest. That’s the NFL offseason in a nutshell, and the McDuffie trade is the most dramatic example of it we’ve seen all year.
