Defensive End Charles Omenihu Signs 1-Year Contract With Washington Commanders

Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Charles Omenihu (90) celebrates

The Washington Commanders are not playing around this offseason. Not even a little. On Wednesday night, Washington agreed to terms with former Kansas City Chiefs Defensive Lineman Charles Omenihu on a one-year deal worth up to $7 million. The base sits at $4 million, with another $3 million in incentives available. How will this deal work out for all sides?

Who Is Charles Omenihu?

Omenihu, 28, is a 6-foot-5, 280-pound defensive end who entered the league as a fifth-round pick of the Houston Texans back in 2019. He made his way to San Francisco, where he spent 2021 and 2022 lining up alongside some very good defensive players before landing in Kansas City. Three seasons with the Chiefs, one Super Bowl ring, and now a fresh chapter in the “Nation’s Capital.”

The man has been around. He’s seen what winning looks like up close. And he’s bringing that experience with him to a Washington defense that desperately needs both.

What Omenihu Brings To the Commanders

Let’s not overthink this. Omenihu is a pass rusher who can line up at both defensive end and defensive tackle, which gives Washington’s defensive coordinator some real flexibility when drawing up packages. That versatility is exactly the kind of thing coaches lose sleep over.

In 2025, Omenihu played in all 17 regular-season games for Kansas City. He finished with 28 tackles (tying a career high), 3.5 sacks, and 13 quarterback hits. Not a Pro Bowl stat line, but steady. Exactly what a depth piece on a championship-caliber defense looks like.

His best season came during the Chiefs’ 2023 Super Bowl run, when he posted a career-high 7 sacks. That version of Omenihu is what Washington is betting on seeing again.

Chris Jones, his former teammate in Kansas City, said it best last season: “We have to keep Charles in good spirits and keep him going.” When one of the best defensive players in the NFL is publicly hyping you up, that means something.

The Bigger Picture: Washington’s Defense Was a Problem

Here’s the ugly truth. Washington’s defense last season was, to put it diplomatically, not great. The Commanders ranked dead last in the NFL in yards allowed (384.0 per game) and 27th in points allowed (26.5 per game).

General manager Adam Peters looked at those numbers and apparently decided he’d seen enough. In the span of just a few days, Washington signed Odafe Oweh to a four-year, $100 million deal, added Cornerback Amik Robertson, brought in Safety Nick Cross, and now lands Omenihu to bolster the defensive line. That’s not tinkering. That’s a full-scale renovation.

Peters has a history with Omenihu, too. He served as the 49ers’ assistant general manager during Omenihu’s time in San Francisco, so this isn’t a blind bet. He knows what the guy is capable of.

What This Means For Washington’s 2026 Season

With Jayden Daniels set to return healthy after a frustrating injury-plagued 2025 campaign that sent Washington tumbling to a 5-12 record, the pieces are starting to fall into place for a bounce-back year.

A healthier Daniels on offense. A completely rebuilt defense. And a locker room that now includes multiple players who know what it takes to win a Super Bowl.

Omenihu slots in as a potential starter at defensive end opposite Tim Settle, giving Washington a legitimate interior pass-rush threat that the team has been missing. He won’t be asked to carry the load, but in big moments, when games hang in the balance, and an offense needs to be stopped, Omenihu has shown he can step up.
