New York Jets Sign Demario Davis To $22 Million Deal
The New York Jets continue to add to their defense, signing longtime Saints and former Jets linebacker Demario Davis to a two-year, $22 million deal that includes $15M in fully guaranteed money. The defense was horrendous for New York last year, and Davis now joins Minkah Fitzpatrick and Joseph Ossai for the new additions on defense today.
Jets Land Davis
At 37 years old, Demario Davis is still playing at a high level. Last season, he had 143 total tackles, two forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery and 0.5 sacks. The Jets get a veteran leader, who they desperately lacked in the middle of the field. The Jets were the team that drafted Davis into the NFL in the first place, and they later traded for him after he spent a brief stint with the Cleveland Browns. Davis now reunites with Aaron Glenn, who was an assistant in New Orleans for three seasons.
Darren Mougey and Aaron Glenn have been hard at work so far in rebuilding their entire defense from the ground up. Davis has posted over 100 tackles in each season since 2017 and is a great fit for New York. With a lot of money to spend, it’s clear they’ve set their sights on defense. So far, they’ve spent a combined $98 million on three players.
What’s Next For The Jets?
After trading both Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams at the trade deadline, the Jets are expected to add more on defense. Tariq Woolen is one of the best cornerbacks available and would fit perfectly in New York. If they were to sign him, he’d be the second player already added to the secondary following the trade of Fitzpatrick earlier this morning.
There are still a ton of free agents on the board with the tampering period opening just under 2 hours ago. General Manager Darren Mougey has been aggressive thus far and shows no signs of slowing down as he looks to turn a disastrous franchise around over the past two decades. Nailing free agency is a big piece to the puzzle, and he’ll need to follow it with a strong Draft class.
