Cameron Jordan to Hit Free Agency for First Time in 15-Year Career

Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan. Dallas Cowboys. Chicago Bears

For 15 seasons, Cameron Jordan has been synonymous with New Orleans Saints football. He has never worn another NFL uniform, never taken a regular-season snap for any other franchise. That is about to change.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday that Jordan will not have a new deal in place with the Saints before free agency opens next week, making him a free agent for the first time in his NFL career. According to Schefter, Jordan is open to leaving New Orleans as he prepares to play a 16th season in the league.

The news lands like a gut punch for Saints fans. Jordan, 36, is the franchise’s all-time sacks leader and one of the most decorated defensive linemen of his generation. Seeing him in a different uniform will take some getting used to, for the fanbase and probably for Jordan himself.

What Jordan Said About His Free Agency

Jordan has not been shy about what he wants from this process. Speaking to TMZ Sports in February, he made his position clear.

“If you get a 10-sack season, if I was 26, I’d be asking for top dollar,” Jordan said. “Things I’ve never asked for is top dollar. All I’ve ever asked for is to be valued.”

That quote says a lot. Jordan is not demanding a massive contract. He wants to feel appreciated. After 15 years of anchoring a pass rush, recording 132 career sacks and playing in at least 16 games every single season, that does not seem like an unreasonable ask.

Back in January, Jordan said he had a “94 percent” chance of returning to New Orleans. Now, with no deal done and free agency arriving, those odds look very different.

What Jordan Brings to Any Roster

The age question will inevitably come up with Jordan turning 37 next season. But the tape from 2025 answers it directly.

Jordan finished the year with 47 tackles, 10.5 sacks, two passes defended, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. That was his highest sack total since 2021. He did that on a Saints team that went 6-11 and finished last in the NFC South. He was productive on a losing team, which speaks to his professionalism and his motor.

His career resume backs up what the 2025 numbers show. Jordan has eight Pro Bowl selections, a First-Team All-Pro nod in 2017, and back-to-back Second-Team All-Pro selections in 2018 and 2019. He has seven seasons with double-digit sacks. He is, by any reasonable measure, a future Hall of Famer.

Durability has been a defining trait throughout his career. He has appeared in at least 16 games in every season since being drafted by New Orleans in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. That kind of consistency is rare at any position, let alone along the defensive line.

Where Jordan Could Land

Any contender with a need along the defensive line will have interest in Jordan. Bleacher Report identified five potential landing spots: the Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears, Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys and Jacksonville Jaguars.

The common thread among most of those teams is Super Bowl ambition. That is significant, because the one thing missing from Jordan’s resume is a championship. The Saints, currently rebuilding around quarterback Tyler Shough, are not a realistic title contender in the near term. A move to a playoff-caliber team gives Jordan a legitimate shot at the Lombardi Trophy before he walks away from the game.

Is the Door Closed in New Orleans?

Not entirely. Jordan hitting the open market does not mean he is gone for good. Negotiations can continue even after free agency begins, and the Saints could still make him an offer that brings him back. But the leverage has shifted. Other teams will now have the opportunity to make their pitch, and Jordan has made clear he is willing to listen.

For Saints fans, this is an uncomfortable reality to sit with. The possibility of watching Cameron Jordan sack a quarterback in a different jersey is real. And for a franchise that has relied on him for a decade and a half, figuring out how to move forward without him would be a significant challenge.

The next few days will tell the story.
