The New York Mets signed versatile Infielder Nick Madrigal on Friday afternoon. He comes to New York following a non-descript 2024 campaign with the Chicago Cubs. He played 51 games and hit .221 with 10 RBI. Madrigal has spent the entirety of his MLB career in the “Windy City.” He spent his first two seasons with the Chicago White Sox before spending the last three as a member of the Cubs.
According to Mets beat writer Anthony DiComo, Madrigal’s total contract value will hinge upon how much time he spends in the minor and major leagues this season. Madrigal has been a career backup and will serve that same role with the New York Mets in 2025. Will Madrigal be a key piece for the Mets this year?
New York Mets Offseason Summary
The Mets have signed infielder Nick Madrigal, source confirms @Joelsherman1 report. It's a split contract worth different amounts in the Majors or Minors.
Recently non-tendered, Madrigal plays second and third base and is one of the tougher players in the Majors to strike out.

New York had a strong offseason after making an improbable run to the NLCS against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024. They went on to lose in six games. The Mets had a busy offseason signing Right Fielder Juan Soto and Left Fielder Jesse Winker. New York also made a concerted effort to bolster its pitching staff as well. They signed Starting Pitchers Frankie Montas, Sean Manaea, and Griffin Canning.
The Mets also improved the bullpen by signing Relief Pitchers Ryne Stanek and A.J. Minter. New York’s pitching staff let them down in the NLCS as they could not overcome an offensive onslaught by the Dodgers. New York did a great job addressing that issue this offseason.
Final Thoughts
The New York Mets have one big issue on their offseason agenda with Spring Training coming up. That issue deals with what to do with star First Baseman Pete Alonso. He has mentioned his desire to return to the New York Mets in 2025 and beyond, but the sides have been unable to come to terms.
With time running out to agree to a contract, Alonso and New York must figure something out quickly. Madrigal will serve a critical role for New York in 2025 providing them with some much-needed depth. He will backup Second Baseman Jeff McNeil and Third Baseman Mark Vientos/Brett Baty.
