New York Mets Get Crucial 5-0 Victory Over Milwaukee Brewers

The New York Mets secured an important 5-0 win for their playoff hopes.

The New York Mets fledgling offense came alive this afternoon on the road against the Milwaukee Brewers. New York won 5-0 to avoid the series sweep. Before today’s win, New York was 0-5 against the Milwaukee Brewers this year. The Mets got the scoring started early with an RBI single by Left Fielder Brandon Nimmo. New York’s offense added two runs in the top of the fourth with RBI singles by both Catcher Francisco Alvarez and Shortstop Francisco Lindor. Alvarez added a Sac Fly in the fifth inning while Lindor cracked a solo home run in the top of the sixth.

This win was a critical one for the Mets as their playoff hopes will come down to a doubleheader on the road tomorrow against the Atlanta Braves. Will the New York Mets succeed tomorrow and make the 2024 MLB Playoffs?

Starting Pitcher David Peterson was masterful this afternoon against the Brewers. He surrendered one hit over seven scoreless innings while punching out eight. Relief Pitcher Phil Maton and Closer Edwin Diaz both tossed scoreless innings to preserve the shutout. It was New York’s first time shutting out the opposition since they blanked the Washington Nationals on September 18.

New York’s Playoff Position

The New York Mets(88-72) entered the final day of the regular season in the third National League Wild Card spot. They were a game back of the Atlanta Braves(88-72)for the second spot and a half game ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks(89-73)for the final playoff spot. With the Braves losing today, and the Diamondbacks winning, the New York Mets path to the playoffs is simple. They must win one game tomorrow to make the postseason and a sweep would catapult them into the second wild card spot.

If New York and Arizona were to finish the regular season with the same record, New York would get the nod due to a head-to-head tiebreaker. New York took four or seven games this season against the Diamondbacks. In such a long MLB season, every game does truly matter.

Looking Ahead To Tomorrow’s Doubleheader

The entire regular season will come down to two games tomorrow at Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia. New York must win one of the two games as previously stated while Atlanta must win one game as well. Atlanta also holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over Arizona after winning five or seven against them this year. Both the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves control their destiny while the Arizona Diamondbacks will be sitting at home hoping some things break their way to make the playoffs. If either New York or Atlanta loses both games tomorrow, Arizona would slide into the third wild card spot.
