New York Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza announced Sunday morning the team would be without Catcher Francisco Alvarez for 6-8 weeks. The young catcher is scheduled to have surgery tomorrow to repair a fractured left hamate bone. Essentially, he has a hand fracture. He suffered the injury yesterday during batting practice.
Alvarez is no stranger to hand injuries as he missed nearly two months last season after tearing a thumb ligament in his left hand after sliding into a base. He returned to the field and was a crucial part of New York’s improbable run to the NLCS. Luis Torrens is Alvarez’s backup and will pick up the slack in his absence. How will the New York Mets fare without Alvarez to begin the regular season?

New York had a strong offseason. They landed the biggest free agent this winter in Right Fielder Juan Soto. The Mets also re-signed First Baseman Pete Alonso and signed Starting Pitchers Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes. The Mets enter the regular season with World Series aspirations, and being without Alvarez does not get the season started on the best foot.
Final Thoughts
It is unclear if this injury news will lead to New York signing a veteran option. The Mets could also trade for a catcher to stabilize the position until Alvarez is healthy enough to return. In what is supposed to be a great season for the Mets, it has gotten off to a rocky start.
