New York City Celebrates 2026 Knicks NBA Championship
New York City today celebrated the 2026 Knicks’ NBA championship. It was their first win in 53 years, and when one thinks of the other sports, it has been a long time since New York City has won a championship in any sport. The celebration included a ticker tape parade, down Broadway, toward City Hall, where the Knicks were given keys to the city.
There was blue and orange confetti and millions of blue and orange-clad fans, many wearing Kincks’ jerseys and newly minted Kincks’ championship gear. One of the nice things about New York is that there are many stars. Many of them are fans of the Knicks as well, and they walked the parade route and greeted fans. Do you think the Knicks will repeat as champions?
New York Knicks Victory Parade

The New York Knicks had a victory parade today. There is nothing like winning a championship in New York, which is not quite like winning anywhere else. Champions get a ticker tape parade down Broadway, the so-called Canyon of Heroes. Here is a play-by-play of the event, which was quite a spectacle.
The Parade started at 10 AM near Bowling Green in lower Manhattan. People who hoped to view the parade started gathering up to three hours before the parade began. There was a threat of rain, but the weather held up.
Millions gathered along the parade route to see their heroes. They were rewarded for their patience by seeing much more than the team. Many stars were either in the parade, like superfan Spike Lee, or walked the parade route and high-fived or hugged fans. These included Matthew Modine, Mariaka Hardeny, Ben Stiller, and Timothee Chalmet.
The event concluded with a reception at New York City Hall. The event featured a musical performance by Alicia Keys. The Knicks, coaches, staff, and owners were given keys to the city by the Mayor. He is a big Knicks fan and wore a jersey under his sports jacket. He has been a season ticket holder for a long time and referenced the long-suffering nature of Knicks fans and the never-say-die attitude that defines New Yorkers.
Many former Knicks attended the event. The mayor shouted ot these guys. John Starks, Patrick Ewing, Bernard King, Charles Oakley, Allan Houston, Charles Oakley, Larry Johnson, Stephon Marbury, Nate Robinson, Jeremy Lin, Carmelo Anthony, Rolando Blackman, Mardy Collins, Raymond Felton, Marcus Camby, J.R. Smith, Kristaps Porziņģis, Iman Shumpert, Toney Douglas, Amar’e Stoudemire, Jared Jeffries, Langston Galloway, Lance Thomas, Immanuel Quigley, RJ Barrett, Dante DiVincenzo and Julius Randle.
History of Ticker Tape Parades
There have been 210 ticker tape parades in the history of New York City. The first one was in 1886, the dedication of the Statue of Liberty, which many thought would walk if the Knicks won a championship.
While parade-goers marched through downtown, there were scraps of ticker tape, ribbons of paper historically used to print real-time stock market data by telegraph, which were used, and the parade got its name. These scraps of paper were called ticker tape. Those who worked in Wall Street offices around the parade route threw the paper scraps out of the windows of tall buildings and down over the city as part of the celebration.
Conclusion
Several people who were interviewed along the route, as well as several who spoke at City Hall, referenced the fact that it had been since 2009 (when the Yankees won the World Series) since there was a ticker tape parade in New York City. It is fair to wonder now when the next one will be. The Knicks will all be back next year, so they are possible. The Yankees are playing very well right now. We will see.
