The New England Patriots signed veteran Quarterback Joshua Dobbs to a two-year deal on Monday evening. He will be slated as the team’s No. 2 starting quarterback in 2025. He could also be the third-string quarterback behind starting Quarterback Drake Maye and backup Joe Milton III.
He spent the 2024 regular season with the San Francisco 49ers. He started in Week 18 against the Arizona Cardinals and fared relatively well. He went 29-of-43 with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Dobbs has been a backup quarterback for the majority of his career but has performed well when asked to start games. Will he be a positive influence for the New England Patriots?
New England Patriots Offseason Outlook
New England has had a busy day in free agency. A few of their marquee moves were signing Offensive Tackle Morgan Moses, Linebacker Robert Spillane, and Cornerback Carlton Davis. The Patriots entered free agency with the most cap space in the league and have not been shy about using it.
Dobbs could be forced into duty in 2025 since Maye was limited to 13 games in his rookie campaign. New England must continue upgrading its offense this offseason as Maye needs at least one more marquee weapon. The Patriots have been linked to Wide Receivers Tee Higgins and Cooper Kupp this winter.
Final Thoughts
Dobbs is the quintessential backup quarterback. He will help show Maye what it means to be a starting quarterback and can step in if called upon in 2025. This is a solid move for the franchise as they look to keep improving their roster in the hopes of returning to the postseason.
