Oklahoma City Thunder Dominate Phoenix Suns To Win Game 1 Of Western Conference Playoff Series

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Jared McCain (3) drives.

If you tuned in late to Sunday’s Western Conference series opener, you missed the only fun the Suns had all afternoon. Phoenix jumped out to a cute 5-0 lead. For about 90 seconds, you could almost convince yourself we had a competitive basketball game on our hands. Then, the Oklahoma City Thunder woke up, remembered they are the defending NBA champions, and proceeded to absolutely dismantle Phoenix to the tune of a 119-84 beatdown.

Dillon Brooks Pokes the Bear (and Misses the Target)

You have to admire the sheer, irrational confidence of Dillon Brooks. Before the game even tipped off, he was already up to his usual antics, refusing to let Chet Holmgren see the game ball. Moments into the first quarter, Brooks picked up a flagrant foul for swiping Holmgren across the face.

But the real crime Brooks committed on Sunday was his shot selection. He finished with 18 points on a staggering 6-for-22 shooting from the floor. Yes, you read that right. He took five more shots than Devin Booker. Every time the ball clanked off the rim, you could practically hear the Thunder bench cheering. When your top on-ball menace is single-handedly building a brick mansion in the playoffs, your team is in serious trouble.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Finds a Way

Here is the terrifying thing about the Thunder: their superstar doesn’t even need to have a hot shooting night to rip your heart out.

Reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander actually struggled from the field, hitting just 5 of his 18 attempts. But elite players find a way to get it done. SGA relentlessly attacked the paint, forced the issue, and practically lived at the charity stripe, knocking down 15 of his 17 free throws. He finished with 25 points, 7 assists, and got to spend the entire fourth quarter chilling on the bench with a towel draped over his shoulders.

The Supporting Cast Is Fully Loaded

The defining story of this game wasn’t just SGA. It was the terrifying realization that Oklahoma City is healthy and firing on all cylinders.

Jalen Williams, after playing just 33 games this season due to injury, looked completely unbothered. He was an absolute magnet for the basketball, diving for loose change, picking pockets, and dropping 22 points with the kind of explosive energy that makes opposing coaches lose sleep.

Down in the paint, Holmgren was an absolute nightmare for the undersized Suns. Phoenix simply had no answer for him. Holmgren dropped 16 points in the first half alone, swatted shots into the front row, and showcased a defensive masterclass that suffocated any hope of a Phoenix paint attack.

What This Means For the Rest Of the Series

If Game 1 is any indicator, the Suns are marching toward a very quick, very painful exit. Booker (23 points) looked exhausted trying to carry the load, especially after top defensive Guard Jordan Goodwin left the game with a calf injury.

Oklahoma City boasts the best defense in the league, and they showed exactly why on Sunday. They switched on everything, contested every jumper, and completely suffocated the Suns’ offense. If Phoenix doesn’t figure out a way to generate easy buckets and talk Brooks out of pretending he’s the primary scoring option, the Thunder are going to bust out the brooms by the weekend.
