Key Players to Watch

New York Knicks

As the undisputed engine of the Knicks, averaging 26.3 points and 6.6 assists, Brunson has a history of dominant revenge games when playing against the Nets. Providing elite floor spacing and rebounding, averaging a double-double with 20.8 points and 11.8 rebounds, Towns will be a problem for the Nets defense. As the team’s defensive anchor leading them in steals, and a dangerous perimeter threat shooting 38% from deep, OG Anunoby is another player to keep an eye on in tonight’s matchup.

Projected Starting Lineup:

  1. Jalen Brunson (PG)
  2. Landry Shamet-replacing Josh Hart (SG)
  3. Mikal Bridges (SF)
  4. OG Anunoby (PF)
  5. Mitchell Robinson-replacing Karl-Anthony Towns (C)

Brooklyn Nets

Since the Nets have transitioned into a full rebuilding phase, head coach Jordi Fernandez’s focus is primarily on his rookie class and defensive anchors. 19-year-old rookie Point Guard Nolan Traore is expected to start in tonight’s matchup. He is a primary playmaker averaging 8.3 points and 3.0 assists per game. Coming off a career-best performance earlier this week, Saraf is listed as probable in the injury report due to foot soreness. He is a versatile guard who has seen increased usage as the season winds down.

As a high-energy rookie forward, Drake Powell has moved into the starting lineup recently to provide defensive versatility. As the longest-tenured Net and their most consistent player, Nic Claxton leads the team in rebounds at 7.1 PPG and blocks at 1.2 PPG, and is the defensive focal point tasked with containing the Knicks’ interior scoring.

Projected Starting Lineup:

  1. Nolan Traore (PG)
  2. Drake Powell (SG)
  3. Ziaire Williams (SF)
  4. Danny Wolf (PF)
  5. Nic Claxton (C)

A High-Powered Offense vs a Struggling Defense

Tonight’s matchup at Barclays Center features a large statistical divide between the high-powered Knicks offense and a struggling Nets defense. The Knicks are currently one of the NBA’s most efficient offenses, fueled by top-notch shooting and rebounding.

Knicks Offense vs Nets Defense

The Knicks hold the 5th-best three-point percentage in the league at 37.3%. They dominate the glass, ranking 3rd in rebounds per game and 5th in offensive rebounding, allowing them to create frequent second-chance scoring opportunities. While Claxton provides a rim-protecting presence, the Nets as a whole have struggled to prevent points in the paint. They rank 27th in opponent three-point accuracy, allowing teams to shoot over 37% from deep.

Nets Offense vs Knicks Defense

The Nets rank last in the NBA in offensive rating and points per game at 106.6. They also have the league’s lowest field goal percentage at 44%. With Porter Jr. sidelined by a hamstring injury, the team lacks a proven primary scoring threat. In their last meeting with the Nets, the Knicks’ defense held them to just 66 points, the lowest single-game total in the NBA season.

What to Expect in Tonight’s Matchup

While the Knicks have already clinched a postseason berth and are fighting for the number two seed in the Eastern Conference, the Nets have been mathematically eliminated. The Nets will look to snap their current five-game losing streak while at home, and the Knicks will look to extend their winning streak versus the Nets to 14. Expect the Knicks to try and close the Nets out early behind their star power duo in Brunson and Towns.
