Which NBA Teams Perform Best in Clutch Situations?

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards (5) dribbles the ball up the court during the first half against the Denver Nuggets in game one of the first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs at Ball Arena.

If you’ve been wondering which NBA teams perform the best in clutch situations, you’ve come across the right article. According to a new study by Doc’s Sports, some NBA teams perform better in clutch situations, both in the regular season and the postseason, than others.

The top-ranked sports information site analyzed 20 years of NBA data to identify the top NBA teams that perform the best in clutch situations, both in the regular season and postseason. Read on for a closer look at the sports information site’s recent study.

NBA Postseason Clutch Leaders Since 2006

By definition, clutch refers to a player’s ability to perform exceptionally well under high-pressure and crucial situations, such as the final moments of a close game in the regular season or postseason.

In addition, a clutch player has an ability to maintain composure and execute crucial plays during intense moments of games, such as the final few minutes of a game. There has been no shortage of clutch leaders during the NBA Playoffs in the last 20 years. The Cleveland Cavaliers lead in clutch postseason situations at 62.34%. The New York Knicks trail at 61.29%. The Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, and San Antonio Spurs round out the top five at 59.78%, 57.69%, and 57.53%, respectively.

NBA Regular Season Clutch Leaders Since 2006

Clutch situations are frequently influenced by confidence, experience, and focus. According to various sources who specialize in sports psychology, moderate pressure can enhance a player’s performance. In contrast, excessive pressure can lead to a metaphorical choke, when a player fails to perform at the peak.

There has been a steady stream of clutch leaders during the NBA regular season in the last 20 years. The Denver Nuggets lead in clutch regular season situations at 55.15%. The San Antonio Spurs trail at 55.06%. The Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Portland Trail Blazers round out the top 10 at 54.36%, 54.10%, and 53.78%, respectively.

Key Findings In NBA Clutch Study

For the record, the gap between the NBA teams’ regular season and postseason clutch moments can be significant as opposed to insignificant.

The New York Knicks rank second in clutch performance during the NBA Playoffs at an astonishing 61.29%, but just 26th during the regular season at 45.18%. The Miami Heat rank third in the clutch during the NBA Playoffs at a staggering 59.78%, but only 10th in the regular season at 52.40%. The Golden State Warriors rank fourth in the clutch during the NBA Playoffs at an astounding 57.69% but fall to11th in the regular season at 52.21%.

Most NBA teams fall within a tight 49% to 55% range. This shocking statistic signals that the small differences in late-game executions have the power to separate the outcomes. In contrast, clutch games are becoming less frequent as the time passes. The regular season average per team fell from 44 from 2006-07 to 36.73 in 2025-26, while the postseason average dropped from 92 to 68 in the same span.

“Fewer games are being decided in the final minutes, so each clutch possession carries more weight,” said Raphael Esparza, a sports betting analyst at Doc’s Sports.

“For bettors, the edge comes from targeting teams that consistently execute late, because those chances are happening less often but deciding more outcomes. A small number of additional wins in these spots can directly impact playoff seeding and market perception. Not all close games are equal; teams with a proven late-game track record are the ones gaining an edge.”
