Miami Heat Cruise to Victory Against Washington Wizards Behind Bam Adebayo’s 83 Point Outburst

Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo (13) reacts after becoming the NBA's second highest scorer of points in a game against the Wshington Wizards at Kaseya Center. Adebayo scored 83 points.

Yes, you read that correctly, there is a new number two on the NBA’s single-game scoring list, as the Miami Heat’s star center Bam Adebayo lit up the Washington Wizards for a monumental 83 points in one of the greatest scoring performances in NBA history on Tuesday night.

Adebayo Dethrones Kobe Bryant’s 81 Point Game

In what was thought to be a nearly impossible scoring mark to beat, the legendary 81-point game posted by Los Angeles Lakers all-time great Kobe Bryant back in 2006 has finally fallen. It was a lights-out performance from the jump for Adebayo tonight, as he scored 31-points in just the first quarter alone, as he single-handedly outscored the entire Wizards team in the period. That record pace would slow a bit in the second quarter, with Adebayo heading into halftime with just 43 points after that huge first quarter.

That 31-point first quarter by Adebayo would be just the second time this century that a Heat player has scored over 25 points in that exact quarter, joining Miami Heat great LeBron James on that short list. Adebayo would also eventually pass LeBron James for the Heat single-game record of 61 points by the end of the third quarter. Adebayo would account for over half of the Heat’s total points in the win.

Almost half of Adebayo’s 83 points would come from the free-throw line, as he went 36 for 43 from the charity stripe. Those makes and attempts from the line would also set new NBA records, as he passed Dwight Howard in free-throw attempts, and passed Adrian Dantley in free-throw makes in a single game. The NBA record books were completely turned upside down in Miami tonight.

Wizards Offense Plays Well Despite Trae Young’s Absence

Despite less than spectacular performance on defense in yet another loss, the Wizards’ offense was able to keep pace with the Adebayo-led Heat offense in this game. Washington would end the game shooting 52% from the floor and 42% from the three-point line, as both teams’ defenses were nonexistent for the entirety of tonight’s game.

That good outing on offense comes after the Wizards announced earlier today that star guard Trae Young would not suit up against the Heat due to injury management. Young had played the previous two games for Washington while on a minute’s restriction, as the Wizards have taken it slow with Young since his return from an MCL sprain in his right knee.

The Wizards would receive numerous contributions on offense in the loss, as over 6 players scored in double figures for the game. The two biggest contributors were Alex Sarr and Will Riley, who were the stars of the show for the Wizards’ offense tonight. Sarr would score a team-high 28 points in just 20 minutes of play, while Riley would drop 22 points in the loss for Washington.

The biggest area the Wizards struggled in on offense was ball security, as they committed 23 turnovers, which directly led to 31 easy points for the Heat in the game. The personal foul situation was also a big problem for the Wizards as well, with over 3 players fouling out in the game tonight.

Heat Pick Up Crucial Win to Stay in Playoff Contention

It was both a historic and big win for the Heat tonight, as their hunt for a playoff spot is still very much alive following the win. Miami currently holds a slim half-game lead over the Orlando Magic for the 6th-place spot in the Eastern Conference standings. Tonight’s win provides a bit of a cushion for a Heat team that has struggled to find their way out of the play-in position in the East this season.

The Heat also have a chance to move up in the standings, as they’re now tied with the Toronto Raptors for the 5th-place spot, and can move into that position if they can win their next game and the Raptors suffer another loss.
