The Presidents Cup is tied at 5-5 after two exciting days of play. Which team took control on Saturday putting itself in a great position to claim the coveted Presidents Cup on Sunday? There was plenty of drama and excitement at Royal Montreal Golf Club.
Which Team Made a Move?
Saturday is known as “moving day” on the PGA Tour. The goal in the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday is to make the cut so you can play the last two rounds on the weekend. Play well on Saturday, move up the leaderboard, and put yourself in a position to win on Sunday. Considering the incredible fashion in which the Thursday and Friday Presidents Cup matches plated out, Saturday was “moving day” at The Presidents Cup.
The US team won all the close matches on Thursday jumping out to a 5-0 lead. Then the International Team roared back on Friday winning all five matches – three in big blowouts – to tie The Presidents Cup at 5-5. With 12 singles matches scheduled for Sunday, the eight points up for grabs on Saturday could put either team in a great position to win The Presidents Cup on Sunday.
The US Team Takes a Commanding Lead
As it turned out, the US Team was up to the challenge winning both the morning and afternoon session 3 – 1. In taking a commanding 11 – 7 lead into the singles matches on Sunday, the US moved into a great position to claim The Presidents Cup. The US needs only 4.5 points to win their tenth straight Presidents Cup.
The Korean Kims and Cantlay Wow The Crowd
Don’t be fooled by the 6-2 score. Saturday was full of excitement with several matches coming down to the last nail-biting hole with an important point on the line. None of the matches were as exciting as the Korean duo of Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim (not related) taking on Americans Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele.
The Kims put on a show – literally. Jumping, shouting, and exciting the crowd with incredible shot after incredible shot. The most improbable could have been Si Woo’s chip-in for a birdie on the 16th hole. With the US team already in with an easy par, team Kim couldn’t even find their ball in the thick rough surrounding the green.
After finding the ball, the Kims were awarded a free drop as the ball had imbedded in the ground. Si Woo took full advantage. Facing a seemingly impossible chip shot in thick rough to an elevated green, he holed the shot. Both the Kims and the crowd erupted while Cantlay and Schauffele walked to the next tee in disbelief. The match remained tied as the teams stood on the 18th tee box. On the final hole, Patrick Cantlay returned the favor when he holed a long birdie putt. The Kims were silent. This time it was the US team jumping for joy. Si Woo had a long birdie putt to tie the hole and the match but missed.
The US Team Has One Hand On The Cup
Winning that match was a huge deal. Had the International Team won the hole, they’d have been down only two points and had a fighting chance on Sunday. Even a tie would have left a three-point deficit. Yet Cantlay’s clutch putt gave the US team a comfortable four-point lead heading into Sunday. It’s never over. Sports are exciting because anything can happen. Yet while the International Team has a chance. It’s a slim chance at best. The fat lady may not be singing yet, but she’s warming up her voice.
