Yankees win Rubber Game 9-2 As Virus Concerns Scratch Ryan Weathers In Favor Of Start From Paul Blackburn
The Yankees were heavily beset by injuries in this game. Nevertheless, they won the rubber game of this series 9-2. Ryan Weathers was scratched from the start in favor of Paul Blackburn. He was wild and relieved by Brendon Beck, who made his major league debut.
Jose Caballero and Ben Rice were both out, and on the first batter of the game, Jasson Dominguez ran into the wall, making a good catch. He was carted off. Baseball teams need to have depth. It is a long season, and injuries happen.
Often, the baseball teams that win the World Series or make the playoffs are the deepest. The Yankees had their depth tested today. Do you think this team is deep enough to win the World Series?
Yankees And Rangers Game Summary, May 7

The Yankees scored a run in the first inning on back-to-back triples by Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger. That was the first time since Chase Headley and Carlos Beltran hit back-to-back triples in 2012. In the third inning, Ezequiel Duran hit a solo home run and tied the game at one.
In the fifth inning, the Rangers scored on a groundout to take a 2-1 lead.Jazz Chisholm Jr. made a fantastic play on that grounder and saved what could have been a much bigger inning. In the sixth inning, Trent Grisham hit a bases-loaded double that scored three runs, and the Yankees led 4-2.
Then, he scored on a JC Escarra single. Then Aaron Judge singled, and Escarra scored. The Yankees batted around. Then, Bellinger singled, and Goldschmidt scored. The score was 7-2 Yankees. The Yankees scored a single run in the seventh inning and one in the eighth inning.
Virus Concerns
Ryan Weathers was scratched from his start today for the Yankees. He had a viral infection and lost nine pounds, and said he could not eat or drink anything, so he got an IV. He is scheduled to throw off a mound Friday in Milwaukee and is expected to make his scheduled start in Baltimore.
He said he feels better now, so it seems he is on the road to recovery. Paul Blackburn started the game for him today, and the team made some roster moves due to this unexpected illness and Will Warren’s short start last night.
MASH Unit
It was not only Weathers who had injury concerns. Jose Caballero was hit by Nathan Eovaldi last night and was not in the starting lineup today. He was available off the bench. Ben Rice missed his fourth consecutive game with a hand contusion. On the first play of today’s game, Jasson Dominguez ran into the wall, making an unbelievable catch.
He was carted off the field. So, since Cody Bellinger came off the bench to play left field, Ahmed Rosario moved to right field, and Ryan McMahon came off the bench to play third base (which Rosario left), the Yankees had 1 healthy player on the bench, Austin Wells.
Brendan Beck
Brendan Beck made his major league debut, pitching in this game after Paul Blackburn was wild in the first inning. Beck is 27 years old, and the team had high hopes for him when he was drafted in the second round out of Stanford. However, his path to the Majors has been derailed by injuries.
He tore his UCL and had multiple surgeries. He missed the entire 2024 season. This year, he has made seven starts for AAA Scranton-Wilkes Barre and was 2-2 with a 5.11 earned run average. Since he is a starting pitcher, the Yankees were hoping to get some length out of him today.
Standings
The Yankees are 11-3 in their last fourteen games. However, the Rays are 12-1 during that time. They have pulled to within a half a game of the Yanks. The Yanks and Rays are the only teams in the American League that are over .500 coming into this game.
The hypothesis is that most of the teams in the American League are beset by injuries and bad luck. There is a further hypothesis that the American League is much worse than the National League. So far in interleague play, the National League is 99-78 against the American League. So, this hypothesis is born out.
