New York Yankees Win 5-2 Over New York Mets To Kick off Rivalry Weekend Around Major League Baseball
The Yankees got a big start from young ace Cam Schlittler and prevailed in the first game of the Subway Series against their cross-town rivals, the New York Mets. They faced an old friend in Mets Starting Pitcher Clay Holmes, the former Yankee closer. Holmes is having a great season for the Mets.
Holmes, the former closer for the Yankees, turned starting pitcher for the Mets, is having a great season. He is only 4-3, but he has a 1.86 earned run average. He only has a 1.01 Walks Plus Hits divided by innings pitched (WHIP), which is a very good statistic. Who do you think will win this Subway Series?
Yankees Against Mets in First Game of Subway Series Game Summary
George Steinbrenner, the former owner of the Yankees, died in 2010, wanted to win even spring training games against the Mets. It remains to be seen which team will prevail in this Subway Series. However, there is no shortage of storylines from this game.
In the third inning, Cody Bellinger doubled, and Ben Rice scored. The Yankees led the game 1-0, and Bellinger had bad batting statistics on the road. That was a big hit. Then, Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a two-run double. The Yankees led 3-0. More runs are scored with two outs for the team. Now they have 98 two-out runs, the most in Major League Baseball. In the fifth inning, the Yankees scored another run to make the score 4-0. The Yankees probably should have had more.
In the seventh inning, Juan Soto, who Schlittler struck out twice, hit a solo home run. That made the score 4-1. In the ninth inning, Rice returned the favor. He hit a solo home run to make the score 5-1 Yankees. Brett Baty’s RBI single made it 5-2 in favor of the Yankees.
A Battle Of Aces
Schlittler, who leads the American League in a bevvy of pitching categories, started this game for the Yankees. Clay Holmes, who has an excellent 1.86 ERA, started the game for the New York Mets. His four wins lead the struggling team.
This was going to be a low-scoring game because of the quality of the pitching. It is also a safe bet that both managers wanted to win this game and will use high-leverage relief pitchers to get off to a good start in this rivalry series. Holmes struck out 8 batters, but pitched only 4.1 innings. Schlittler, for his part, threw 6.2 innings and tied a career high with 9 strikeouts.
Rivalry Weekend
Across baseball, this is rivalry week. It is also military appreciation weekend. Because it is military appreciation weekend, all of the players wore special green camouflage hats to honor the military. Because it is rivalry weekend, there are several great matchups this weekend, though there is some thought that the advent of the balanced schedule, with all of its built-in interleague games, has diminished the interleague rivalry series, but that does not seem real.
The weekend includes natural rivals such as the Chicago Cubs vs. the Chicago White Sox. The Baltimore Orioles are playing the Washington Nationals. The Atlanta Braves are playing the Boston Red Sox. The Atlanta team used to be in Boston. The Cincinnati Reds are playing the Cleveland Guardians in the battle of Ohio. The Miami Marlins are playing the Tampa Bay Rays in the battle of Florida. The San Francisco Giants are playing the team that used to be the Oakland Athletics. The Texas Rangers are playing the Houston Astros. There are also some clunker series like the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies.
Apple+
This game, in a bizarre effort to make more money on behalf of Major League Baseball, was televised on Apple+. Many people, including me, could not see this game. Tomorrow, the teams are on Fox in a national game. On Sunday, they are both on their respective home networks. So, three games, three different broadcast methods. Anything to make a buck, at the expense of baseball fans. What Major League Baseball should do is show all games on the internet, in the Major League Baseball application.
