New York Yankees Win Second Game Of Series Over Toronto Blue Jays Behind Strong Start From Will Warren

May 12, 2026; Baltimore, Maryland, USA; New York Yankees pitcher Will Warren (29) throws during the second inning against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

The Yankees won a nail-biting game last night. Coming off the 7-6 victory, they won 5-4 today. It is important to win two games in this four-game series against a divisional rival. In doing so, they are guaranteed not to lose ground to their rivals. It seems there is some magic at Yankee Stadium. It must be the ghosts.

The Yankees, who have used five relief pitchers in both of the last two games, needed a good start from their budding star starting pitcher, Will Warren. Warren has pitched well this year, except for one blip, and needed to pitch well and take another step forward. His team needs him. Do you think Warren has it in him to have a great start when his team needs him?

Yankees and Blue Jays Game Summary

The Yankees and Blue Jays have always played intense games, and this game was no different. The game featured a great starting pitching matchup with Dylan Cease facing Warren. Runs were at a premium in this game while the starting pitchers were in the game.

Warren was cruising right along until allowing three runs in the fourth inning. Yohendrick Pinango singled, and Daulton Varsho scored. Then, Jesus Sanchez singled, and Kazuma Okamoto scored. Finally, Andres Gimenez singled, and Pinango scored.

In the home half of the fourth inning, Ryan McMahon hit a huge game-tying three-run home run. Aaron Judge scored, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. scored. In the fifth inning, the Yankees took the lead on a Ben Rice two-run home run. Trent Grisham also scored, and the Yankees took a 5-3 lead.

In the ninth inning, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a sacrifice fly, and Gimenez scored. That made the score 5-4, which was the final score of the game. This was the third consecutive game the Yanks used five pitchers.

Warren pitched five innings. He allowed six hits and three runs. He walked one and struck out three. Cease, the starting pitcher for the Blue Jays, had been one of the best pitchers in the American League. However, chased after just five innings pitched. They only got four hits off Cease, but among them were a three-run and a two-run home run.

A Closer Proposal

The Yankees are suddenly struggling to close out games, and their bullpen is completely overworked. The team is in need of ideas (and relief pitchers). Here is an idea. Make Carlos Lagrange a closer at Scranton and see how he does. If he does well, promote him, give him the Yankees’ ninth inning. He could blow hitters away in high-leverage situations, and with Gerrit Cole coming back, the team does not need a starting pitcher.

If the team does this, they should move the struggling David Bednar to the seventh inning. They should keep Fernando Cruz, with his devastating split-fingered fastball, in the eighth inning.

The team could keep Tim Hill and Brent Headrick as matchup left-handers and use both Ryan Yarborough and Paul Blackman as innings-eating long men. The team must do something extreme to counter this problem.

Cole Coming Back

Per Yankees manager Aaron Boone, Cole will start on Friday. Cole missed all of last season and all of this season so far after having Tommy John surgery. When he was hurt, he was arguably the best pitcher in the league. This was a major injury that, essentially, knocked the team from World Series contention. After throwing his fastball at 99.6 miles per hour in his most recent rehabilitation start, he seems ready. The team definitely needs him.
