New York Yankees Beat Houston Astros 12-4 Behind Strong Start From Will Warren
The Yankees beat the Astros tonight, 12-4. The win was the Yankees’ seventh in a row, and they took advantage of the struggling Astros. Will Warren was the starting pitcher for the Yankees. He pitched well, but not as well as he has pitched. The Astros starting pitcher was Lance McCullers Jr. He was sporting an earned run average over six.
The Astros are beset by key injuries. McCullers might not be a starting pitcher for this team if ace Hunter Brown were not on the injured list. An important metric for a baseball team is its depth. Injuries are going to happen; the question is, how is a team going to respond to those injuries? What do you think? Should a baseball team be able to compensate for injuries?
Yankees and Astros Game Summary
True to form, with a struggling McCullers Jr. starting for the Astros, the Yankees scored three runs in the first inning. Then they got solo home runs from both Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Ryan McMahon. Both of those players have been struggling at the plate this season, so it is great that they are getting going.
McCullers was knocked out of the game after he surrendered his sixth run. That run was driven in on a bullet single from Giancarlo Stanton in the sixth inning. The injuries that the Astros have suffered are clearly affecting the quality of the bullpen.
They brought in left-handed pitcher Colton Gordon. In his first inning of relief, he loaded the bases. He gave up a lead-off home run to Ben Rice in the seventh inning. Then, the Yankees scored more runs, and they pulled away for their seventh win in a row.
Houston Astros Injuries
One of the reasons for the struggles of the Houston Astros this season has been the quantity and quality of the injuries they have suffered. They have placed 18 players on the injured list this year. Among those many injured are some important players.
Cy Young candidate, starting pitcher Hunter Brown, is out. So is Closer Josh Hader. Starting shortstop Jeremy Pena is also hurt. Taylor Trammell is a speedster. He has hurt the Yankees in the past. He is also injured.
The Worm Turns
Two players whom the Yankees could use in their batting order may be heating up. Chisholm Jr. hit his first home run around the Pesky Pole at Fenway Park in Boston. He hit another home run tonight. He also had four runs batted in tonight, which matched his total for the year.
McMahon always plays stellar defense. He made two amazing defensive plays in the 4-2 win on Thursday over Boston. He may win a Gold Glove. He has, however, been almost a guaranteed out when at bat. However, he hit a big game-winning home run against the Los Angeles Angels. He hit another home run tonight. If both of these players heat up with the bat, it would elongate the Yankees’ batting order.
Yordan Alerez
The Astros are beset by injuries right now and struggling. However, Yordan Alvarez has started hot for them at the plate. He is hitting .357, and he hit the ball hard in this game against the Yanks. His 11 home runs are first in the American League. He has 26 runs batted in and an OPS of 1.247. The Astros would be in big trouble if it were not for him. He is as good a hitter as there is right now in baseball.
