Team USA vs Canada World Baseball Classic Quarterfinals Preview

USA shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. (7) hits a home run

After advancing to the knockout stages of the World Baseball Classic, Team USA sets its sights on a duel with continent-mate Canada in a quarterfinal matchup. The U.S. represents the Pool B runner-up. Italy was able to win Pool B after Italy drubbed Mexico, while Canada moved on as the winner of Pool A after a victory over Cuba.

For the United States, this matchup can serve as a get-right game as they pursue WBC glory after being thoroughly embarrassed by Italy, but will the team survive the Maple Leaf? Or will they underachieve and go a second straight WBC tournament empty-handed?

Morale appears to be low for the Red, White, and Blue, and there are key players who started with the roster that have since left or will leave for their respective teams’ spring training sites, but the squad is still talented enough to at least go on a deep run.

Team USA Should Come Out On Top, But Will They?

The USA and Canada are scheduled to meet on Friday evening at Daikin Park in Houston. Everything points to Team USA making easy work of Canada. On paper, its roster is superior to Canada’s, it is a heavy favorite to advance to the semifinals, and the Canadians are inexperienced in relation to the WBC tournament. It is the first WBC that Canada has advanced past pool play.

However, in the past few days, questions have been asked about whether the U.S. is taking the tournament seriously. Most baseball fans are aware of the U.S. celebrating advancing to the quarterfinals after defeating Mexico, even though it had not yet earned a berth. Not to mention Manager Mark DeRosa resting key players during an 8-6 loss to Italy that put itself in danger of missing the knockout stages altogether.

Furthermore, the USA is shuffling its pitching roster ahead of Friday’s showdown, highlighted by two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal going back to the Detroit Tigers’ Spring Training camp. Michael Wacha of the Kansas City Royals and Ryan Yarbrough of the New York Yankees are also leaving for their respective camps, while Tim Hill (Yankees), Will Vest (Tigers), and Tyler Rogers (Tigers) will fill in.

Meanwhile, Canada has to feel good about earning a knockout stage berth and should be able to play relaxed against the Americans because not many anticipated its appearance. There’s also motivation to eliminate its rival to the south after Canada’s men’s and women’s hockey teams lost to the U.S. teams in the Winter Olympics in the gold medal games last month.

Prediction

Even amid the scrutiny Team USA has faced recently, it should still knock off Canada in Daikin Park. Many predicted before the WBC began that the U.S. would avenge its loss in the 2023 final, and as long as the team can regroup and refocus, the talent, especially the batting lineup, should take care of everything.

It is a nice story for Canada advancing to the knockout stages at the WBC for the first time, but this likely is where it meets its demise. Apologies, Canada, you will be 0-3 against Team USA in 2026.
