Philadelphia Phillies 2026 Preview: The Gang Is Back, But Can They Make the Playoffs?

Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner (7) signs autographs

The Philadelphia Phillies have not experienced a great deal of roster turnover since last season. The key question for them will be whether a roster that did not win the World Series last year can even make the playoffs this year, let alone win the World Series.

Many of the same key players are back for the Philadelphia Phillies. Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwaber are fresh off their appearance for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic. JT Realmuto was signed late and is back at catcher. The bullpen is strong for the Phillies. However, the real question for them is, has the championship window closed?

Philadelphia Phillies 2026 Preview

If we could summarize the entire Philadelphia Phillies roster, we would say they are older and have a lot of questions. Even still, there is enough talent on the team to be competitive for a playoff spot.

Pitching

The hitters are not the only players who have questions surrounding them. Ace Zack Wheeler had Thoracic Outlet Surgery and is still out. Christopher Sanchez is the improved second pitcher for the Phillies. He has been increasing his velocity annually and finished second in the National League. Jesus Luzardo is a quality third starter. He has been good since coming over from the Miami Marlins.

Aaron Nola had some injury concerns last season. He has fallen to fourth in the Philadelphia Phillies’ starting rotation. His health is key to how competitive this team will be. The fifth starter is experienced Taijuan Walker. He had one of the league’s lowest strikeout rates last season.

The bullpen is headed by excellent Closer Jhoan Duran. He throws about one hundred miles per hour and has an extreme ground ball rate. Luzardo is a quality left-hander who hurt the team last season with a PED suspension. Orion Kerkering has a closer’s arm. Tanner Banks and Jonathan Bowlan provide depth.

Hitting

Realmuto was signed to be the starting catcher, even though his skills diminished last year. He is going to be backed up by Rafael Marchan and Garrett Stubbs. At first base, the team will continue to rely on Harper. He is an adequate defender at first base and a dangerous bat.

Bryson Stott is the second baseman. He is a former shortstop, so he is a good defender. He also makes great contact. Alec Bohm is a reliable contact hitter and a solid third baseman. Trea Turner plays shortstop, and even though he is 32 now, his 17% strikeout rate last year was the second lowest of his career.

The outfield begins in centerfield with one-time first-round draft pick, and Carl Crawford’s son, Justin Crawford. Adolis Garcia is the right fielder. He is strong and hits the ball with authority. Brandon Marsh is back to play left field. His .280 batting average last season was a career high.

The designated hitter is the powerful Schwarber. He signed a 5-year, $150 million contract in the offseason to stay in Philadelphia. He led the National League in home runs last year, for the second time in the last four years.

Organization and Management

Dave Dombrowski is the President of Baseball Operations. He is venerable, and is now 69 years old. He has won 5 World Series. Owner John Middleton has shown he is willing to spend money. Manager Rob Thomson has been the manager since 2022. He is well-respected by both players and management.

Parting Shots

The Philadelphia Phillies are a 90-win team with the roster they have right now, if they get moderate health and medium performances. However, because management brought most of the players back, this team is highly likely to make a big trade and finish hot. This is a team that could bump up to 100 wins and compete for a World Series.
