Boston Red Sox Fire Alex Cora After 17-1 Victory
The Boston Red Sox are off to a slow start to the 2026 season, sitting with a 10-17 record and are last in the American League East. The team looked like it may have turned the corner after a 17-1 road win on Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles, but the front office seemingly had a different thought process.
Let’s take a closer look at what happened and what it meansfor the Boston Red Sox going forward.
The Boston Red Sox fired Alex Cora

ESPN’s Jeff Pasan is reporting that the Boston Red Sox have fired four coaches, including manager Alex Cora. In addition to Cora, the team also relieved bench coach Ramon Vazquez, hitting coach Peter Fatse, and game-planning coach Jason Varitek.
The Athletic’s Buster Olney is reporting that this was solely Craig Breslow’s decision. Cora was less than halfway through his three-year, $21.75 million extension he signed in the summer of 2024. He has certainly been a strong manager as he has a 619-541 (.534) record and won the 2018 World Series. Cora also was part of the Houston Astros when they were found to be cheating and missed the entire 2020 season as a form of punishment.
The Red Sox are cleaning house and will now be looking for a new manager. Varitek is also a former player of the team, entering his 30th season with the franchise. Boston has struggled in recent years as they have missed the playoffs in three of the previous four seasons.
The Red Sox have a lot of decisions to make with four coaches now out of the franchise. Boston will now have to figure out who will occupy the coaching staff for the remainder of the season, but the team has struggled to get much going throughout the 2026 season. It will be interesting to see how the team is viewed going forward and if they are going to become sellers just one month into the season.
