The Miami Dolphins and Quarterback Zach Wilson agreed to a one-year $6 million fully guaranteed contract on Monday night. Wilson’s deal could be worth up to $10 million if certain incentives are met. He spent the 2024 season with the Denver Broncos under the tutelage of Head Coach Sean Payton. He will now get to study at the feet of Head Coach Mike McDaniel.
Wilson came to the Broncos last offseason after an ill-fated three seasons with the New York Jets. He was drafted No. 2 overall by the Jets in the 2021 NFL Draft. His time with the team did not go well. He was one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the league in New York. Will he be able to have a positive season with the Miami Dolphins?
Miami Dolphins Offseason Outlook
Miami is coming off a disappointing regular season. They finished 8-9 and missed the NFL Playoffs. One of the reasons for their underwhelming regular season was the health, or lack thereof, of starting Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. He was limited to 11 games last season.
Tagovailoa’s NFL career has been derailed by injuries on multiple occasions. He has suffered multiple concussions in his career and missed two games late in the 2024 season with a hip injury. He also missed five games last season after suffering another concussion. Tagovailoa’s injury history makes the backup quarterback of the Miami Dolphins one of the most important jobs in the NFL.
Final Thoughts
Miami is being proactive when it comes to having one of the highest-paid backup quarterbacks in the league. Tagovailoa has only played a full season once in his career. Wilson brings starting experience to a Dolphins team with health issues at the quarterback position. Hopefully, a year under Payton will lead to Wilson being an improved NFL quarterback if he is forced into action this season.
