Luka Doncic Says Farewell to the Dallas Mavericks

Luka Doncic

Star Point Guard Luka Doncic said farewell to the Dallas Mavericks just minutes after the shocking trade broke the internet. Doncic, 25, was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and the Lakers’ 2029 first-round pick. The Lakers received Doncic, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris. Moreover, the Utah Jazz received Jalen Hood-Schifino, the Lakers’ 2025 second-round pick, and the Mavericks’ 2025 second-round selection.

The trade talks were initiated by the Mavericks, league sources told ESPN, and began a few days ago. Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison and the Lakers’ Vice President of  Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka have a long-standing relationship dating back to 2003. That was when Harrison, now 52, served as Kobe Bryant’s marketing manager at Nike and Pelinka, now 55, was Bryant’s agent.

Luka Doncic’s Farewell

Luka Doncic’s farewell, a heartfelt letter on his Instagram account, touched the Dallas Mavericks fanbase in both right and wrong ways. Doncic’s letter was highlighted by an attention-grabbing sentence, “I thought I’d spend my career here [in Dallas] and I wanted so badly to bring you a championship.” Doncic’s letter was posted on X, which attracted plenty of attention from Mavericks and non-Mavericks fans alike.

X user Tony Pappas (@TonyyPappas) responded to the Bleacher Report’s post with, “It’s a business at the end of the day.” Pappas’ response received 20,000 impressions at the time of writing. Pappas was correct, despite the NBA world’s hot-button debate that the Mavericks organization is doing bad and unethical business. The inside details of the Mavericks-Lakers trade remain yet to be seen.

Doncic’s Fiancée Speaks Out

Luka Doncic’s fiancée, model, and influencer Anamaria Goltes, spoke out with her two-word message to the Dallas Mavericks fanbase. Goltes, 26, wrote to her Instagram story, “Thank you” with a blue heart emoji on the same day after Doncic penned his “Dear Dallas” letter to the public. Goltes also re-posted Doncic’s letter after the Mavericks agreed to trade Doncic to the Lakers for a trade package including Davis. In addition, Goltes re-posted the Lakers’ welcome banner for Doncic, which included a photo of him sporting a No. 77 Lakers jersey.

Although Luka Doncic held back from mentioning the Mavericks organization, his father, professional basketball coach and former player Sasa Doncic, didn’t hold back when discussing the Mavericks and their handling of the blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Lakers and Utah Jazz. Sasa Doncic, 50, accused the Mavericks of “hypocrisy” and criticized the “secrecy” with which they orchestrated the three-team trade in an interview with Slovenian media network Arena Sport 1.

Sasa Doncic told Arena Sport 1, “I understand there comes a moment when you disagree with a certain philosophy … You don’t like this or that player, all good — I get it … But I think that exactly this secrecy, or should I say from some individuals, maybe even hypocrisy, this hurts me personally. Because I think that Luka absolutely doesn’t deserve this.”

Mavericks Fans React

The Dallas Mavericks fans reacted to the shocking trade with the Los Angeles Lakers in more ways than one. Disgruntled Mavericks fans protested the trade with a protest and symbolic funeral at the American Airlines Center on Sunday. Other Mavericks fans began boycotting the team by canceling their MavsTV subscriptions, unfollowing the team’s social media accounts, and refusing to attend the team’s home games.

It’s unclear if the Mavericks fans’ actions will lead to a change in the Mavericks organization, as “money talks.” However, Mavericks fans have a right to air their grievances, which might or might not be acknowledged by the Mavericks executives. At least some NBA executives would agree with Mavericks fans, as one Western Conference executive recently told ESPN, “Unfathomable.”
